NEWS & NUGGETS

ARCTIC BLAST ACROSS U.S. WILL MAKE THE ‘POLAR VORTEX’ WINTER LOOK TAME _ Frigid air is blasting southeastward from the Arctic, destined to turn all of the U.S. east of the Rockies — with the potential exception of South Florida — an icebox for the next week or more. This cold snap will be longer in duration and more severe than what the country experienced in January of 2014, when the term “polar vortex” caught fire on social media.

… Like the 2014 event, this one has its origins in the far north. Between this morning (Monday) and Saturday, about 35% of the lower 48 states are likely to experience temperatures below 0 degrees. That means that about 103 million people will experience such bone-chilling cold. A much greater number of people, including residents of Gulf Coastal states, are likely to see temperatures dip below the freezing mark (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

EUROPE’S OLDEST WOMAN SAYS THIS HELPED HER LIVE TO 115 _ Europe’s oldest woman says eating raw eggs has kept her alive for over 115 years. Oh, and one other thing: staying single. Emma Morano said that she’s been single since 1938, when her first and only marriage ended after the death of her infant child. She’s had many suitors since but has rebuffed them all, she says, and attributes her longevity to staying single most of her life. Emma told the New York Times: “I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone.”

YEAR OF ‘SHEEP, GOAT OR RAM’? _ While countries across Asia prepare for the arrival of the lunar new year on Thursday, Western media is still trying to work out exactly what year they’re celebrating. Debate over which zodiac animal — sheep, goat or ram — represents the Year of the Yang, a Chinese word that could translate to all three, has picked up interest on social media. While some animals leave little to interpret, such as Dragon, Snake and Monkey, Yang is an ambiguous term that has left many in the English-speaking world scratching their heads.

… Chinese folklorists attribute the year to the goat.

CAT STRANDED ON TOP OF TRANSMISSION POLE IN HELENA _ A small cat remains stranded on top of a power pole in Helena, Montana. Someone who lives nearby thinks dogs might have chased the female cat up the pole on Friday. The local power company (NorthWestern Energy) says they will take action if the cat isn’t down by today (Monday). A power company spokesman says the pole is high-voltage, so there’s the little matter of keeping its employees safe.

MAJOR MUSEUMS ARE BANNING SELFIE STICKS _ As the selfie stick craze sweeps the nation, major museums in the United States are banning the device in order to protect both visitors and artworks. The New York Times reports that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is just the latest notable museum to issue a ban. Other establishments that have recently decided to do the same include the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the National Gallery of Art, The Smithsonian, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

… There are multiple cited reasons for the ban. First, the spaces are often crowded during peak times, and selfie sticks can intrude upon the personal space of visitors. Second, the long sticks pose a threat to the precious artworks found in the museums. Tripods and monopods are already prohibited at many venues, so it makes sense to add selfie sticks to that list.

… Lastly, the museums are also trying to protect selfie snappers. People in search of the perfect self portrait often take risks in where they choose to pose, and the last thing museums want is their visitors hurting themselves by falling over balconies or tumbling down stairs.

RESEARCHER DEVELOPING TATTOO REMOVAL CREAM _ During tattooing, ink is injected into the skin, initiating an immune response, and cells called “macrophages” move into the area and “eat up” the ink. The macrophages carry some of the ink to the body’s lymph nodes, but some that are filled with ink stay put, embedded in the skin. That’s what makes the tattoo visible under the skin. A profess in Canada (Dalhousie) is developing a topical cream that works by targeting the macrophages that have remained at the site of the tattoo. New macrophages move in to consume the previously pigment-filled macrophages and then migrate to the lymph nodes, eventually taking all the dye with them.

PREGNANT MOM NAILS ‘THRILLER’ DANCE ROUTINE ON HER DUE DATE _ Pregnant mom Bonnie Northsea hoped to induce labor by performing the dance routine from the music video for Michael Jackson’s Thriller on her due date. Wearing a blue sports bra and leggings, the Gainesville, Florida mom gave a flawless and impressive performance at 40 weeks pregnant and posted the video on her Facebook page. The pregnant mom has a three-year-old son.

… Northsea wrote on Facebook Wednesday someone suggested dancing to Thriller to jump start labor. Loving the video, she decided to do the dance and record it. | VIDEO

UPDATE: NO CHARGES FOR WOMAN WHO THREW BACON INTO POLICE STATION _ Here’s an update to a December story I shared with you. A judge has dismissed charges against a Massachusetts woman who threw uncooked bacon and sausage inside a police station while saying she was there to “feed the piggies.” Lindsey McNamara was charged with disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property after the December 26 incident. A judge dismissed the destruction charge, saying police had provided little evidence that McNamara had damaged anything.

NEW STUDY CLAIMS THAT DRUMMERS ARE MORE INTELLIGENT _ According to a collection of studies, drummers are super smart, due to a variety of factors relating to being in the rhythm section. Looking at multiple studies, researchers found that the dude at the back of the band isn’t the head-scratcher you might think he is; in fact he’s more likely to be the smartest of them all.

… For example, researchers in Stockholm (Karolinska Institute) found that drummers who kept a tighter rhythm also scored better on a 60-question intelligence test.

… If that wasn’t enough, other studies added that rhythmic music actually makes people smarter. A University of Washington study showed better results from participants who undertook rhythmic light and sound therapy. Additionally research from the University of Texas tested the same process on children with ADD, finding that it not only had the same effect as Ritalin, but their IQ’s actually went up.

… Oxford University found that drummers produced a “natural high” when playing together, which heightened both pain and happiness thresholds.

ANONYMOUS BOY SENDS VALENTINES TO EVERY GIRL IN SCHOOL _ Valentine’s Day is supposed to be the most romantic day of the year but, sadly, isn’t for everyone. Which is why a male high school student at Edmond High School in Oklahoma surprised all 1,076 female students with candy and cards. And the student did it anonymously — at first. Secrets are hard to keep, especially in high school. It didn’t take long for the student body to learn who was behind this random act of kindness. Secret Romeo Dan Williams says he worked all summer to raise enough money for his Valentine’s Day surprise.

TEEN IN VIRAL TARGET PHOTO LANDS JOB _ A North Carolina (Raleigh) teenager whose efforts to land a job at Chick-fil-A became a social media sensation has been hired. Yasir Moore’s story began when he went into a Target store to buy a clip-on tie before an interview at the Chick-fil-A. The Target didn’t have clip-on ties, but the employees helped Moore tie a tie and get ready for the interview. A shopper (Audrey D. Mark) saw what was going on and snapped a photo of a Target employee helping Moore tie the tie. She shared the photo with Target on its Facebook page and the moment exploded across social media. The employee even helped the kid tuck in his shirt properly and then showed him how to give a proper handshake. Mark said the employee even help the teen out with a couple of practice interview questions. Moore eventually landed the job at Chick-fil-A after a multiple interview process.

HOTEL STAFF DELIVERS ON CUSTOMER REQUEST FOR NICOLAS CAGE _ Any hotel concierge can amuse you with stories about quirky guests. But great hotels have the policy that employees must go out of their way to create a satisfying and memorable lodging experience. One of those is Hotel Indigo in downtown San Antonio, Texas. After check-in a guest received a message from the hotel’s text messaging service. The text told the man to let hotel staff know if he needed anything at anytime. So, during a boring work conference, the man texted that he’d like a framed picture of Nic Cage in Con Air. When the guy got back to his hotel room later in the day he was shocked to find a framed photo of Cage in all his Con Air majesty resting on a pillow.

… The Nic Cage requests didn’t end there. The guest continued to ask for photos of the actor just to see how far Hotel Indigo would go. A request was made to tape a photo of Cage from the movie Moonstruck on the bathroom mirror. When the photo wasn’t sent, the guest requested the photo be sent to the room along with a fresh supply of bath towels, and Hotel Indigo followed through, attaching a brief note of apology.

LACK OF SNOW ON HOUSE LEADS TO DRUG BUST _ The snow, or lack of, helped authorities in the Netherlands make a big drug bust. They raided a house near Amsterdam and seized a crop of marijuana plants. How did they know about the contraband?  The roof of the suspect’s house was the only one in the neighborhood that wasn’t covered in snow. That’s a sign of heat, and where there’s heat, there’s a good chance it’s coming from a growing operation. | IMAGE

WOMAN GOT ‘VALENTATER’ FOR VALENTINE’S DAY _ Ladies, did your guy hit a home run on Valentine’s Day — or strike out? A guy in Illinois struck out big when he gave his wife a potato. Now before you run to your computer to nominate him for Worst Husband of the Year, know this: the potato was special. Really special. So special it’s been given a name: ValenTater. You see, our romantic hubby gave his wife a potato that had grown in the shape of a heart!

… But the Mrs. ain’t having nothing to do with her man’s attempt at a healthy holiday so he’s been forced to get rid of it on eBay. His ad reads: “My wife didn’t find the humor in this years Valentines Day gift, she HATED her ValenTater. I had to give her this heart shaped potato when I saw it. The winning bidder can make Valentater salad, twice baked Valentater, mashed Valentater, baked Valentater, or plant it and give your special someone a dozen Valentaters next year. It will be shipped quickly and any money raised will go towards taking my wife out to make up for this gift being a spud. In all seriousness my wife did get this as a gift.”

The horse was trapped with its feet up in the air before being rescued. The owner of the horse, Charles Campbell, said that the police dispatcher first thought that he was stuck in the bathtub. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: CROATIAN FIGHTS FINE OVER POT-SMOKING POPEYE _ A Croatian man is appealing his conviction on charges of promoting drug use after he used Facebook to depict Popeye the Sailor Man consuming something a little stronger than his trademark spinach. WEATHER NERD FREAK-OUT _ Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore was just a tad bit excited when he heard thunder while standing outside on camera during a blizzard that was sweeping much of the Northeastern United States on Sunday. The phenomenon — known as thundersnow — is rare and happens during intense snowbands when atmospheric instability increases to the point that it creates lightning and thunder — similar to when it happens during regular summer thunderstorms. But Cantore didn’t just get stoked once. He and his crew heard thundersnow six times at the same location, which caused him to dance around in the snow while yelling and pumping his fists. | VIDEO

• The word “illuminated” means the same thing even if you only use every third letter.

• They should make another Taken movie, about Liam Neeson’s character being under-appreciated for trying to keep his family safe. They should call it “Taken 4: Granted.”

• Netflix should produce a series of workout videos for people to stream at home for free if they’re subscribed to Netflix

• The most reliable news source is The Onion, because you know it’s always going to be fake news.

• Telling a woman to relax is the most counterproductive method of getting her to relax.

• “Short” is a longer word than “long.”

• The winter Olympics should have an event for ski jumping with a wingsuit.

JOKE OF THE DAY

There was a young man shipwrecked on an island. He found a magic lamp on the shore one day, picked it up and rubbed it. A Genie appeared. However, he was not a typical Genie, he was an attorney Genie. When the Genie told the man he was also an attorney the man laughed and said, “Oh come on, Genies can’t be attorneys too!” The Genie said he would prove it. He told the man to make his three wishes, but on one condition, for every wish he made, all attorneys were granted DOUBLE of what the man wished for. The man pondered the offer and decided that something was better than nothing and decided his three wishes. “My first wish is for 1 million dollars”. The Genie reminded the man that he would grant the wish, but all attorneys would get double that amount. The man agreed and then made his second wish. “My second wish is for a beautiful blonde with blue eyes.” Once again the Genie granted the wish and also granted all attorneys with two of the blonde eyed babe. The Genie announced that the man had one more wish and to consider his choice carefully. The man thought for a moment. Suddenly he drew the Genie’s attention to a piece of driftwood lying on the beach. He told the Genie: “For my next wish, please pick up that piece of driftwood and beat me HALF to death!”
