BOBCAT CATCHES SHARK ON FLORIDA BEACH _ It’s a photo that could be used as the inspiration for a new SyFy Channel horror movie. But according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, it’s probably real. The photo is of a bobcat walking along the beach with a shark in its mouth. John Bailey snapped Monday evening while walking (in Vero Beach). The photographer said he noticed the bobcat staring at a shark in the water that was feeding on a smaller fish. The bobcat then leaped into the ocean, caught the shark and dragged it onto the beach. Once the bobcat saw the beachgoer, it dropped the four-foot shark and ran into the nearby woods. • Photo

Journalists and photographers attending the event expected to report on Cameron’s talk about tax and pensions with the host family, but instead a picture of his eating a hot dog with a knife and fork went viral.

… During a visit to the U.S back in 2012, Cameron struggled to eat a hot dog without utensils while being photographed eating a hot dog with President Obama at a basketball game.

WRITING PEN FOR PARKINSON’S PATIENTS _ A group of students in London (Royal College of Art and Imperial College London) has developed a special pen that can smooth out the handwriting of Parkinson’s patients. Within the plastic housing are high frequency vibrational motors that help with writing by stimulating muscles in the hand as well as reduce the effort required to move the pen across the paper.

… The idea is similar to the Liftware Spoon that helps people with Parkinson’s and essential tremors to eat on their own without making a mess.

NBA MVP DONATED CAR TO A SINGLE MOM AND HER KIDS _ When he was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 NBA All-Star Game back in February, Russell Westbrook received a brand new Kia SUV as part of the car manufacturer’s sponsorship deal with the league. Not bad, but a free car doesn’t really move the needle that much for a highly-paid guy like Westbrook. So the Oklahoma City Thunder point guard decided to give it to somebody who could really use it.

… He asked his charitable foundation staff to find someone in the community for whom a new car could literally be a life-changing gift. They found Kerstin Gonzalez, a 19-year-old single mother of two who’s on track to graduate from high school this spring and hopes to pursue higher education while continuing to raise her two boys.

FAKE WINDOWS HIDE BLIGHT OF VACANT HOMES _ When homes are vacant, as many became after the housing crisis a few years ago, they become targets of vandals and thieves. So in a Minneapolis neighborhood they’re trying to deter vandalism with fake windows. NEW HAMPSHIRE RESORTS EXTEND SKI SEASONS _ It turns out all that snow in the Northeast has a silver lining. While some ski resorts have been challenged by a lack of snow this winter, several New Hampshire resorts are extending their ski seasons due to large amounts of remaining snow. The end of March often marks the end of the ski season, but there is enough snow this year at some New Hampshire resorts to stretch the season into April. Most resorts will feature reduced lift ticket prices for the remainder of the time they are open.

HERE’S HOW MUCH SPARE CHANGE THE TSA COLLECTED LAST YEAR _ Harried travelers are increasingly leaving their nickels and dimes in the bins used during airport security screenings, which has led to a growing source of revenue for the Transportation Security Administration. In the fiscal year 2014, the TSA collected almost $675,000 in loose change, up from $638,000 in fiscal year 2013. The amount of money collected has been steadily increasing since 2010. Overall, the agency has collected about $3.5 million in loose change since 2008. The cash is used to fund TSA security operations.

… Fliers at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport left the most change behind, $43,000. Los Angeles International Airport ranked second at $42,000 and San Francisco International Airport ranked third at $35,000.

BLIND PAINTER RAISES OVER $1 MILLION FOR CHARITY _ Jeffrey Owen Hanson has created over 1,400 beautiful paintings and his undeniable talent has earned him fans in the likes of business magnate Warren Buffett and singer Elton John. But what makes his talent even more impressive is the fact that Hanson is blind. The young man from Overland Park, Kansas has been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder which caused a brain tumor that left him legally blind. Add to that, Hanson also suffers from a few other physical and mental issues.

… His passion for art started during his chemo and radiation treatments. His mother gave him watercolors and urged him to paint so that he would not dwell on his sickness. When friends of Hanson’s parents began snapping up his painted note cards they decided to try selling some of his larger pieces in the driveway of their home. Now, Hanson’s paintings sell for at least $4,000 each, and Hanson has decided to donate over $1 million of what he has earned to more than 100 organizations.

A PLAN TO PLANT 1 BILLION TREES A YEAR WITH DRONES _ An engineering firm in the United Kingdom wants to change the world 1 billion trees at a time, and they’re relying on drones to do it. The team at BioCarbon Engineering has developed an experimental system that uses drones to plant thousands of trees per day in deforested areas. The aerial technique is cheaper and faster than planting trees manually, and makes it possible for conservationists to counteract voracious industrial appetites for trees. BioCarbon is so confident in its drone tree planters, the company expects to plant 1 billion trees every year.

… The tree-planting drones follow a pre-planned path and use pressurized air to fire germinated seedpods into the ground at specified locations from a height of about 6 to 9 feet. The pods are encapsulated in a nutrient-rich hydrogel, which provides food for the young trees. After planting, the same mapping drones can revisit reforested areas to assess their progress.

PRANK BIRTHDAY CARD WON’T STOP PLAYING MUSIC _ Brothers Travis and Nick Peterson have designed a truly evil musical birthday card: Once it starts playing, it won’t stop for at least three hours. It won’t stop until the battery dies, or the receiver manages to destroy it.  The whole idea began when Nick and Travis were discussing how much they hated musical cards. The brothers are funding the hilarious idea on Kickstarter, already raising well more than their original $7,500 goal. • Link

… The Joker Card arrives in safe mode so the sender can sign it without the music going off. An activation tab has to be pulled before it’s placed into the envelope. Once the receiver pushes the play button, it won’t stop for hours. After pressing play, the unlucky recipient will be forced to listen to Happy Birthday over and over again until the card’s battery dies — or they destroy it. To make it even more evil, if you press the button again to try and stop the music, the volume just increases.

Every season is beer season, of course. But summer? Now that’s a season that can’t be lived through without the best beers. But before you head to the local liquor store to stock up on cases of your favorite brew and store them in what you think is your cool, dark garage, please press pause for a moment and remember HOLT. HOLT is short for Heat, Oxygen, Light and Time.

HEAT is used in the brewing process, but after the beer is bottled (or, heaven forbid, canned), heat is bad for your brew. It won’t “spoil” it, but it will speed up the beer’s chemical breakdown.

OXYGEN is easy to avoid — just don’t open your beer until you’re ready to drink it. And if you’re a slow beer drinker — and that’s OK — consider splitting bottles with your buds. When it’s time for more simply pop open an other and enjoy something colder than what could have been the warm, bottom half of the bottle.

LIGHT is the reason most bottled beers are packaged in brown or green bottles. But those colored bottles aren’t magic, so until it’s drinking time keep your beer in a cool or cold low-light or no-light place.

TIME is simple: Ask your local beer expert where and when the brew was made. If he can’t tell you, move on. One reason why locally- or regionally-produced beers taste so much better is because the natural chemical breakdown process that continues after beer is made hasn’t killed the flavor yet. So unless you know when it was made, avoid it.

Warmer weather means it’s time for a true return to nature. Yes, I’m talking about golf. Are you ready to pick up the sticks again? Take my golf quiz.

When selecting equipment for a round of golf, you should look for:

  • clubs that match your height and grip
  • golf balls that fly true and far
  • a golf cart that can store a 12-pack in the back

One of the trickiest things a golfer must deal with is getting a good tee time. For example, if you wanted to tee off at 7 Saturday morning at (popular country club), you should get in line at:

  • 5:30 Saturday morning
  • 7:00 this evening
  • last October

If you have a health problem, golf can be a good exercise because

  • it’s a low-impact aerobic workout
  • it gets you out in the fresh air and sunshine
  • if you have a coronary on the golf course, there will be dozens of doctors around to help.

A couple of painters were painting a church steeple one day, and they were quickly running out of paint. To get the job done before it rained, they began to dilute the paint until they finished. It was a very spotty job. But, when they were done, the two painters got in their truck and headed for home. As they were driving down the road, it started to rain. All the diluted paint ran off the steeple. God was understandably angry at the men, so he appeared in front of the truck, which came to a screeching halt. The painters heard Him say in a booming voice: “REPAINT, AND THIN NO MORE!”

LORETTA LYNN has been honored with the Crystal Milestone Award for the 2015 ACMs. The recognition is given in honor of her illustrious, 50-year career in which she has blazed trails for women in country music. Past recipients of the Crystal Milestone Award include GARTH BROOKS, KENNY CHESNEY, MERLE HAGGARD and TAYLOR SWIFT.

… Loretta’s award was announced Tuesday along with some other off-camera ACM Awards winners. LUKE BRYAN is the 2015 Gene Weed Special Achievement Award winner, which according to the ACM acknowledges “unprecedented, unique and outstanding individual achievement in country music.” In addition to performing for 1.7 million fans last year (a personal record), Luke had six straight number one hits from his Crash My Party album.

… ERIC CHURCH is the 2015 ACM Award winner of the Jim Reeves International Award, which is presented to an artist successful in promoting country music all over the world.

… ALABAMA has been named the 2015 ACM Career Achievement Award winners, marking their advancement of country music’s popularity through other endeavors within the entertainment industry.

GARTH BROOKS became teary-eyed Tuesday as he dedicated a new child play zone at an Indianapolis children’s hospital, praising the colorful, game-filled space as a “miracle” that allows ailing youngsters to forget their illnesses and just be kids having fun. Garth arrived at Riley Hospital for Children in a race car driven by IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball, then waded into a crowd that filled the hospital’s atrium. After a ribbon-cutting for the hospital’s Child Life Zone, Garth entered that 4,200-square-foot space, which was funded through the Teammates for Kids foundation, which he co-founded in 1999.

… Garth told the crowd, “What you’re witnessing here in these zones is truly a miracle. It’s a place in a hospital where no doctor and no needles are allowed. It’s a place where a kid gets to be a kid.”He said research suggests young patients who enjoy moments of fun need less pain medication and have faster recovery times than patients who don’t.
