WATCH A SPECTACULAR METEOR SHOWER THIS WEEK _If you’d like to wish on a shooting star, this week is a great opportunity. The Perseid meteor shower will peak on Wednesday (August 12) and Thursday (August 13). Every year, Earth’s orbit around the Sun carries it through a cloud of dusty, rocky debris left in the wake of Comet Swift-Tuttle. When those particles burn up in our atmosphere, they create the bright streaks of light we call meteors. Swift-Tuttle itself hasn’t done an Earth flyby since 1992.

$2 GAS PRICES? _ Gas prices could go as low as $2 per gallon by Christmas. STUDY FUNDED BY BUTTER INDUSTRY FINDS THAT BUTTER IS BAD FOR YOU _ Something unusual has happened in the food industry. The Danish Dairy Research Foundation, likely in hopes of boosting butter’s regard, funded a study about the popular cooking ingredient. But when the research was delivered, it didn’t exactly paint butter in a favorable light. The study’s findings (published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) established that even moderate levels of butter consumption could result in higher cholesterol. At the very least, the study showed that butter raises blood cholesterol levels more than alternatives such as olive oil. So a study about butter, funded by the butter industry, found that butter is bad for you.

TEACHER VOLUNTEERS TO LET GOV. CHRISTIE PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE _ Last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie slammed teacher’s unions, saying that they ought to be “punched in the face.” So Russ Walsh, a New Jersey teacher, has offered up his face for the pummeling, volunteering to take a punch from the governor. A 45-year teaching veteran, Walsh recently took Christie to task for his statement, writing in a blog that “I regret that I have only one face to give for my profession.” Walsh writes: “I am well qualified for the job. I have been a public school teacher and administrator for 45 years. I have been the president and the chief negotiator of my local teachers union. I have been sharply critical of Christie’s education policies on my blog. I deserve that punch in the face. I have earned it.”

… Walsh asks in his blog post: “How have his repeated attacks on teacher unions improved education for the children of New Jersey? The answer is, of course, not at all. The children of New Jersey are worse off educationally than they were when Christie took office. And yet, those teachers he loves to hate keep soldiering on, doing their best in the face of intolerable and deteriorating conditions to provide a good education for New Jersey’s children.”

But just as he entered the stadium, a bull came from behind and gored him in the neck. He was taken to a nearby hospital but pronounced dead on Sunday.

… A quote from the town’s mayor is priceless: “This sends shivers down our spine… we organize these events as a tradition, so that people can enjoy them, but these things happen. Bulls are dangerous animals and when there are a lot of people some don’t pay attention.” Yes, that’s right, being gored by a wild, 2-ton beast sends shivers down the man’s spine. Who could have predicted this would ever happen?!

However, the kayakers say the woman kept swimming despite their warnings. The woman was brought to shore and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Bundy said that the ex was “saying disrespectful things” about Jaynes and admitted he eventually punched the ex in the jaw. At the sentencing hearing, the judge asked Bundy whether Jaynes was “worth it” and whether the couple were married. Then, the judge said, “You know, as a part of my probation, you’re going to have to marry her … within 30 days.” Otherwise, he would send Bundy to jail for 15 days. However, it seems that Ben may have won over the most important audience he was performing for: the executives at Warner Bros., the film studio behind the film. In response to a very recent screening of the film for Warner Bros. executives, the WB brass was so impressed by Affleck’s part as the Dark Knight, they’re not only going to let him write and direct his own Batman standalone film, they also locked him in for the next decade or so in more roles as the Caped Crusader. • On why she founded the Happy Hippie Foundation: “Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about my being gender-fluid and gender-neutral. And some people snarl at that. They want to judge me. People need more conventional role models, I guess.”

Some new research shows just how much your name can affect your lifetime success.

If your name is easy to pronounce, people will favor you more. Researchers (New York University) found that people with easier-to-pronounce names often have higher-status positions at work. One of the psychologists explains, “When we can process a piece of information more easily, when it’s easier to comprehend, we come to like it more.”

If your name is common, you are more likely to be hired. Researchers (Marquette University) found evidence to suggest that names that people with common names were more likely to be hired, and those with rare names were least likely to be hired.

Uncommon names are associated with juvenile delinquency. Researchers (Shippensburg University) found that, regardless of race, young people with unpopular names were more likely to engage in criminal activity. The findings obviously don’t show that the unusual names caused the behavior, but merely show a link between the two things. And the researchers have some theories about their findings: “Adolescents with unpopular names may be more prone to crime because they are treated differently by their peers, making it more difficult for them to form relationships.”

If your last name is closer to the beginning of the alphabet, you could get into a better school. Researchers found that even though students with last names that were low in the alphabet tended to get higher test scores overall, among the students who applied to universities and were on the margins of getting admitted or not, those with last names that were close to the top of the alphabet were more likely to be admitted.

Using your middle initial makes people think you’re smarter and more competent. According to research published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, using a middle initial increases people’s perceptions of your intellectual capacity and performance.

You are more likely to work in a company that matches your initials. Since we identify with our names, we prefer things that are similar to them. In one study (Ghent University) researchers found that people are more likely to work for companies matching their own initials.

Women with a gender-neutral name may be more likely to succeed in certain fields. According to The Atlantic, in male-dominated fields such as engineering and law, women with gender-neutral names may be more successful. One study found that women with “masculine names” like Leslie, Jan, or Cameron tended to be more successful in legal careers.

Gabe landed a job as a Walmart greeter, which was a good job for many retirees. Unfortunately he lasted less than a day. About two hours into Gabe’s first day on the job a very loud, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. Following the greeter training manual Gabe said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Walmart! Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The mean, angry woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “What? Heck no, they ain’t twins. The oldest one is 9, and the other one is 7. Why in the world would you think they’re twins? Are you blind, or just stupid?” Gabe replied, “I’m neither blind nor stupid, madam. I just couldn’t believe someone slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at Walmart.” Gabe’s first and last shift at Walmart lasted those two hours.

BLAKE SHELTON is threatening to sue In Touch over a false “affair” story. The tabloid published a cover story alleging Blake cheated on MIRANDA LAMBERT with singer Cady Groves. Blake and Miranda actually mocked the claims when they were first floated by Life & Style more than two years ago. But in the wake of the former couple’s divorce, sister publication In Touch saw fit to re-publish the debunked and discredited allegations, and even included an interview with the “other woman.”

… A rep for Blake says the story is “absolutely false.” Furthermore, the spokesperson slammed Groves for perpetuating her stories, and called it an “injustice” that In Touch gave her a platform.

… Word is Blake’s legal team has sent In Touch a letter once again emphatically stating that there was NO affair of any sort between Blake and Groves, and dismissing her as an “infatuated,” unreliable source. So far, though, In Touch is standing by its report.

MERLE HAGGARD’s no-show at Nashville’s Ink-N-Iron Festival came down to a dispute with festival organizers. Merle performed the first night of the four-day tattoo, music and car event, but pulled out of his scheduled Friday performance. Minutes before he was to perform he posted on social media: “Tonight my management team advised me that the terms and conditions of my contract with Ink & Iron had not been met for last night’s show and would not be met by showtime tonight. I place my confidence in my management team to make these decisions. I regret that I will not perform for my Nashville fans tonight. I look forward to returning to Nashville soon under better circumstances.”

… To make it right, fans who purchased single-day wristbands for Friday’s concert were given unlimited access to all festival events for the rest of the weekend.
