• 1896: Henry Ford made a successful pre-dawn test run of his horseless carriage, called a quadricycle, through the streets of Detroit.

• 1937: Grocery chain owner Sylvan Goldman introduced the shopping cart at his Humpty Dumpty store in Oklahoma City. Goldman’s first cart was wheels and a basket on a folding chair.

• 1969: 22-year-old Armando Ramirez sneaked into the wheel pod of a jet plane at Havana airport and flew nine hours at 29,000 feet to Spain. Despite very thin oxygen and minus-40-degree temperatures, he survived.

• 1973: The patent for the ATM was granted.

• 1984: The album “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen was released.

Reports have emerged that Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays superhero Doctor Strange, took on four muggers who were attacking a delivery person. [The incident will be recreated in the new Marvel TV series Avengers: Law and Order.]

Courtney Love’s former son-in-law is accusing her of attempted murder. [She made him listen to her music.]

There’s talk at ABC of relaunching the Roseanne show without Roseanne. [Or Twitter.]

A furniture retail company (Raymour & Flanigan) is running an odd campaign. Buy a mattress and you get a free Papa John’s pizza each month for a year. [I’m confused. Why does the mattress company want to punish its own customers?]

A recording has surfaced of the stars of the TV show Lethal Weapon, Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford, having a profanity-laced argument. [They say it sounds like a conversation between Samantha Bee and Roseanne.]

Minnesota health officials had to launch a special campaign to track down a woman who unknowingly touched a bat that had rabies. Fortunately, the woman was found and treated. [She’s doing well and resting comfortably on the ceiling.]

NEWS OUTLETS BARELY COVERED PUERTO RICO _ On Tuesday, Harvard researchers published a study estimating that approximately 5,000 deaths can be linked to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The same day, ABC canceled Roseanne Barr’s sitcom after Barr sent a racist tweet. Cable news covered Barr’s tweet and her show’s cancellation 16 times as much as the deaths of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico.

… Last Tuesday, MSNBC covered the Puerto Rico story for 21 minutes, 18 seconds; CNN: 12 minutes, 3 seconds; Fox News: 48 seconds.

CRAYOLA IS RELEASING A LINE OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS _ Crayola is releasing its own line of makeup aimed at adults. The Crayola Beauty line features 58 products made from vegan ingredients. Playful cosmetics, like bright eyeshadow palettes, color-changing lipstick, and a face crayon that works on eyes, lips, and cheeks are all packaged with the Crayola designs you remember from your childhood. And like its crayon boxes, Crayola’s new line offers a variety of colors: There are 95 distinct shades in total.

YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT A NIGHT OWL _ Plenty of folks who can only approach the morning hours with a strong coffee like to boast of their night owl status. And it’s an alluring title: Nights owls have been said to be smarter and more creative than those who wake up at the crack of dawn. But productivity expert Laura Vanderkam says that not everyone who is groggy in the morning is truly a night owl — in fact, many “night owls” are really just up late puttering around Instagram and watching one more episode of whatever on Netflix. True night owls — as defined by research — are those who do their best work at night, not simply those who stay up late all the time.

… Only 15 to 20% of the population are night owls.

WHALE DIES FROM EATING OVER 80 PLASTIC BAGS _ Way to go, humans, you killed a whale with plastic bags. A whale found in a canal in southern Thailand died after eating more than 80 plastic bags. The small male pilot whale was barely alive when he was discovered. Rescuers attempted to nurse the whale back to health, but he died on Friday after spitting up five plastic bags. A necropsy revealed over 17 pounds of plastic, including more than 80 plastic bags, in the whale’s stomach.

WOMAN SEES JESUS ON HORSESHOE CRAB _ A Florida woman found Jesus on a horseshoe crab shell last month. Cathy Rader said a friend gave her the shell after he found it on Canaveral National Seashore in New Smyrna Beach. Rader said the image kept getting lighter as each day passed and started to resemble a Rembrandt picture of Jesus, bringing her to tears. It’s a sign Rader said she’s been looking for as she’s been faced with challenges to publish her photography book that’s all about New Smyrna Beach. • IMAGE

DANCING FBI AGENT DROPS GUN DURING BACKFLIP AND SHOOTS MAN IN LEG _ An off-duty FBI agent accidentally shot a bystander in the leg when his gun fell from its holster. He dropped the gun as he danced and did a backflip on the dance floor of a bar in Denver. A fellow customer hit by the bullet was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

POLICE FINALLY CATCH ‘SERIAL TOILET CLOGGER’ _ A citizen helped Sheboygan, Wisconsin, police flush out the Deland Park Toilet Clogger. For over a year there have been numerous incidents of property damage at the park. It involved a toilet being clogged with a plastic soda bottle, causing damage and driving up labor costs to remove the clog. On Sunday police arrested a 33-year-old man for the damage. He was identified by a tip provided by a citizen.

SPACE STATION CREW MEMBERS RETURN FROM 168-DAY MISSION _ Three members of International Space Station Expedition 55 crew returned to Earth Sunday morning after a 168-day mission. NASA flight engineer Scott Tingle, Anton Shkaplerov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos and Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency landed safely in Kazakhstan at 8:39 AM. While on the space station the crew completed hundreds of experiments, including materials testing, studying the effect of microgravity on bone marrow and researching plant growth in space.

… After their departure, Expedition 56 crew members Commander Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold of NASA, and Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos will operate the station and await three new crew members set to arrive Friday.

NEIGHBOR FORCED MOM, 3 KIDS TO BE ‘CHORE SLAVES’ _ A man in Washington state allegedly forced a neighboring family of a mom and three teens into “chore slavery” before being arrested. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Wellington Waggener, had grabbed a 12-year-old boy before school. According to the boy’s family, Waggener told the boy to “come here,” before forcibly grabbing his coat and taking the boy to his yard. Waggener allegedly struck the boy in the face and forced him start sweeping.

… The boy’s mother and his two siblings discovered him at Waggener’s yard and tried to explain that they needed to go to school. Waggener then allegedly forced the all of them to do yard work so “they knew what it was like to be slaves.” After approximately an hour, Waggener reportedly walked across the street, enabling the family to flee and call police.

SMOKERS AT GREATER RISK OF HEARING LOSS _ Here’s another reason to quit smoking: research shows smokers are at greater risk of hearing loss than non-smokers. 4,700 people were studied and smokers were found have a 70% greater chance of sustaining hearing loss. The problem also affects non-smoking family members, but to a lesser degree. Researchers think smoke has a toxic effect on inner ear cells.

EXERCISE BEFORE BED IS PROBABLY OK _ Research disputes the notion that exercise before bed makes sleep more difficult. It used to be thought that exercise in the morning meant a good nights sleep but late night activity made it hard to fall asleep. A study says people with good sleeping habits can exercise whenever they wish with no ill effects. The only change found in late night exercisers was a rise in body temperature.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN ORDERED TAKE-OUT SO DELIVERY GUY COULD KILL SPIDER _ A woman in the UK ordered take-out food just so the delivery person would help her remove a spider from her home. She tweeted: “My fear of spiders was taken to a whole new level today in which I ordered food in a hope that the delivery driver would remove the spider.” Thankfully, delivery guy Joe was able to come to her rescue.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: THIEF USED FACEBOOK TO NEGOTIATE RETURN OF ITEMS _ A 27-year-old man pleaded guilty to burglary and blackmail after stealing objects from a Masonic lodge in New Zealand. After the theft, the man negotiated the return the items in return for “7 grams.” Police didn’t quite understand the demand, and decided he meant “seven grand” — $7,000. No, the thief admitted later, he meant 7 grams of meth. He was easily caught because he was doing the negotiation via Facebook, using his real name.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: NUDE MOTORCYCLIST CRASHED _ A naked motorcyclist wearing just a scarf, sunglasses and a pair of sandals crashed his bike after he was stung on the inner thigh by a bee. The man, who had been driving to the swimming area at a German nudist colony, lost control of the bike as he swatted the insect away. He fell on to the road, but escaped with just a shoulder injury and minor cuts and bruises. Police said they are considering pressing charges because the man wasn’t wearing a helmet.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN HIT BY BEANS THROWN BY OFFICER _ Man armed with a hammer gets hit by two cans of beans from an officer. A man threatening people in a Florida grocery store got canned. Caught on surveillance, a deputy is seen walking up behind a man holding a hammer. The deputy chucked a can of Bush’s Baked Beans at the suspect, and then a second can. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested. • VIDEO

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: PRISONER HAD CASH, GUNS IN CELL _ Officials in Brazil confiscated more than $170,000 and two pistols from a drug trafficker. What’s unusual is that the cash and guns were confiscated from his jail cell. They also found his cell equipped with a TV, a refrigerator and gym equipment.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: THIEF GETS HELP FROM VICTIM _ In China an unidentified man hailed a cab. The man had lots of household appliances with him, so the cabbie helped load them into the cab. It was while he was helping that the cabbie realized several of the items looked familiar. Yep, the man had robbed the cabbie’s house and was now loading the cabbie’s stuff into his taxi. The cabbie dropped the thief off at his residence and then called police.

2018 STANLEY CUP FINAL (8p ET, NBC) — The Capitals host the Golden Knights in Game 4 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. The Capitals lead the series 2-1.

THE BACHELORETTE (8p ET, ABC) — Several guest appearances in this new episode, as former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay and Bryan Abasolo test eight of the bachelors on an obstacle course. Of the weekend’s three new wide releases in North America, the lost-at-sea adventure Adrift registered strongest, making $11.2 million.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH SAYS FINAL AVENGERS MORE SHOCKING THAN INFINITY WAR _ AUDIO If you left the theater stunned after Avengers: Infinity War you may need to emotionally prepare yourself for Avengers 4. During an interview with Esquire, actor Chris Hemsworth said he was blown away when he read both scripts, but that the second one takes it to another level. Hemsworth said, “If you were shocked by [Infinity War], I think the second one is even more shocking, for other reasons entirely. The second one I’m probably even more excited about.”

INFINITY WAR REACHING $2 BILLION TODAY _ Sometime today (Monday) Avengers: Infinity War will hit a milestone: $2 billion in ticket sales. The fourth Avengers film comes out May 3, 2019.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH RESCUES CYCLIST _ Superheroes aren’t just fighting the bad guys in movies. Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch was recently hailed a hero after fending off several men who allegedly tried to rob a food delivery man in London. Cumberbatch was riding in an Uber when he noticed the altercation taking place, jumped from the car and intervened. Cumberbatch then yelled at the men, saying: “Leave him alone.” He pulled the four men off the cyclist, and was almost punched by one of the men, but managed to duck. Eventually, the attackers fled.

MEGHAN MARKLE’S EX HAS NEWS OF HIS OWN _ Meghan Markle’s ex-husband appears to have bounced back from their breakup with wedding plans of his own. Trevor Engelson posted an Instagram photo of him with health expert Tracey Kurland, his girlfriend of three years, with a diamond ring on her left hand. He captioned the photo with: “Luckiest guy I know! Get ready to party!” Engelson began dating Markle in 2004 and married her in 2011, but the couple divorced after two years.

PARAMOUNT SCRAPS AIRING HEATHERS, CITING SCHOOL VIOLENCE _ After delaying its airing in the aftermath of February’s Florida high school shooting, Paramount Network is permanently scrapping Heathers. Representatives from the company said that the TV reboot of the 1988 movie black comedy about high-school murder and suicide will not air on Paramount or any other Viacom properties.

… The show based on the film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater had been set to premiere in March, but was delayed after the Parkland, Florida shooting that left 17 dead.

LAURA PREPON AND BEN FOSTER ARE MARRIED _ Orange is the New Black star Laura Prepon has married actor Ben Foster (Hell or High Water). Prepon tweeted Sunday: “Just Married! Thank you for all the love and support. Wishing all of us the good stuff!” They announced their engagement in the fall of 2016 after having dated only a few months. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, last August.

JIMMY FALLON SURPRISED GRADS IN PARKLAND, FLORIDA _ The senior class from the Florida high school where a gunman killed 17 people in February received diplomas Sunday and heard from commencement speaker Jimmy Fallon, who urged graduates to move forward and “don’t let anything stop you.” Four families were to receive diplomas for loved ones who were slain in the attack.

TWO GUNMEN SHOWED UP AT STAN LEE’S HOUSE DEMANDING MONEY _ Police were called to the home of Stan Lee late last week where two reported gunmen were detained for allegedly showing up at the Marvel creator’s Hollywood Hills residence and demanded money. One or both of the men had apparently also been spotted on the property the previous day. Lee was accompanied by his lawyer, business partner, and a nurse at the time of the confrontation, and when it became apparent that the men were armed, they all retreated back in the house. The source, who asked not to be named, said up to 20 cops arrived and police helicopters whirred above.

ORIGINAL VOICE OF PRINCE CHARMING DIES AT 96 _ Character actor William Phipps, who starred in sci-fi films of the 1950s and voiced Prince Charming in 1950’s Cinderella, died Friday. He was 96.

THE MIDDLE SPIN-OFF _ ABC’s The Middle has come to an end, but the network is looking to revive the series with a spin-off. The Middle spin-off will focus on character Sue Heck, played by Eden Sher.

HOUSE OF CARDS WRAPS FILMING _ Robin Wright took to Instagram to announce that filming has officially wrapped on the final season of House of Cards. Season six is the one without Kevin Spacey, the former House of Cards star brought down by a sexual harassment scandal.

ROSEANNE FANS WANT A DARLENE SPINOFF _ After Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet led ABC to cancel its hit revival of Roseanne, the network is reportedly now considering a spin-off series centered on someone other than the series’ title matriarch: Darlene. The Hollywood Reporter says ABC has set a meeting to discuss the possibility of giving the sharp-witted middle Conner child the lead, with actress Sara Gilbert proposing a “rebrand” of the character. The network is said to be open to that and other ideas, so long as Barr is denied any financial gain or involvement in the production.

• 1783: The first public demonstration of a hot-air balloon flight took place at Annonay, France, where brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier succeeded in launching their 33-foot-diameter balloon. The unmanned balloon rose an estimated 1,500 feet and traveled about 7,500 feet before landing after a 10-minute flight.

• 1851: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery serial, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, started a ten-month run in the National Era abolitionist newspaper.

• 1956: Elvis Presley introduced his new single, Hound Dog, on The Milton Berle Show, scandalizing the audience with his suggestive hip movements.

• 1968: Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California, by Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan. Kennedy died the next day.

• 1977: Singer Alice Cooper’s boa constrictor was bitten by a live rat it was being fed for breakfast. The snake died.

• 1981: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that five homosexuals in Los Angeles had come down with a rare kind of pneumonia; they were the first recognized cases of what became known as AIDS.

• 2001: A burglar fell asleep after taking sleeping tablets to calm his nerves during a raid on a hospital pharmacy in Amman, Jordan. The raider took three tablets from the haul of medication he had stolen. He then fell asleep and was later awakened by police.

• 2002: Elizabeth Smart, 14, was kidnapped from her bedroom in her family’s Salt Lake City home. (She was found alive in March 2003; two people accused of abducting her have been found mentally unfit to stand trial.)

• 2004: Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, died in Los Angeles at age 93.
