NEWS ATTACK!

A truck driver in New York City got a large branch stuck between his truck’s cab and trailer. He drove like that for five blocks, severely damaging over a dozen vehicles. The owners of the cars can’t believe that the man wasn’t arrested. [And three families of displaced neighborhood squirrels are filing a lawsuit.]

In Maine, a man driving a farm tractor led police on a very slow three-mile chase. [He was arrested and scheduled to be mentally evaluated at the state institute for the criminally ridiculous.]

They now teach how to brew beer at Purdue University. [So, you can now get credit for something that almost got me kicked out of school.]

Canada is going to make it legal to send marijuana through the mail. [Mail carriers are going to have to worry about more than just dogs chasing them.]

The White House announced a plan to merge the Education and Labor Departments. [Instead of getting nothing done under two roofs, they can more efficiently get nothing done under one roof.]

China has stopped accepting plastic recyclables from other countries so around the world used plastic is starting to accumulate. [But it’s okay because we have plenty of plastic bags to put it all in.]

A restaurant (Raising Cane) in Missouri is getting bad press after a video went public of a worker stirring the iced tea with her hand. [Apparently, she tried to save time and still follow the company rule of washing your hands after using the restroom.]

A Washington state woman pled guilty to embezzling nearly $300,000 from Costco. [The case raises so many questions, not the least of which is why did a person with $300,000 keep working at Costco?]

A rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO will go on auction later this summer. It’s expected to sell for as much as $45 million. [But that includes free oil changes.]

Actress Zoey Deutch says James Franco is a lousy kisser with bad breath. [There goes another one of my fantasies.]

NEWS & NUGGETS

TODAY IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF THE YEAR _ Today (Friday) is the happiest day of the year. Scientists have factored outdoor activity, nature, social interaction, positive memories of childhood, temperature, and anticipated time off and figure their formula points to today being the happiest. The scientists say that we got a healthy dose of social interaction on Father’s Day. And very soon most Americans will enjoy at least one extra day off on July Fourth. Plus today is Friday and summer has officially started.

KFC LAUNCHES PICKLE FRIED CHICKEN _ Sonic has a pickle slush, Chick-fil-A has risen in popularity due to their pickle-brined chicken sandwiches and now KFC is getting into the pickle craze with what they have affectionately named “Pickle Fried Chicken.” Set to hit stores on Monday (June 25), KFC will take their “Extra Crispy Chicken recipe and coat it in pickle sauce, featuring onion and garlic notes, buttermilk and a white and black pepper blend — a combination that is sure to satisfy even the ultimate foodie’s palate.”

THIEF SWIPES TIP JAR FROM COFFEE SHOP, DRIVES OFF IN MERCEDES _ Investigators are hoping tips from the public can help catch a man who swiped a tip jar from a California (Saugus) coffee shop and drove off in a Mercedes. Surveillance video shows the man, wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap, walk up to the counter at Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders. He waits until shop employees have their backs to him, then calmly takes the jar, puts it under his coat and strolls out the door. He drove off in a black Mercedes.

EAGLES ARE RAFFLING OFF A REAL SUPER BOWL RING FOR CHARITY _ The Eagles are going to raffle off a Super Bowl ring and all the proceeds will go to charity (Eagles Autism Challenge, Inc.). ZOO PUTS APRIL THE GIRAFFE ON PREGNANCY WATCH _ April the giraffe, who became an internet craze during her last pregnancy in 2017, may be expecting another calf. Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, where the 15-foot-tall giraffe is staying, announced on its Facebook page this week that zoo staffers have been collecting April’s feces for a month to determine if she’s pregnant. The samples will be shipped to another zoo’s lab to confirm whether April is pregnant. If the 16-year-old giraffe is pregnant, she will likely give birth in 2019.

… April became somewhat of a social media celebrity when the last few weeks of her pregnancy were livestreamed on YouTube, raking in more than 232 million views. More than a million people watched April while she was in labor and gave birth to her calf Tajiri. Tajiri, whose father is a 6-year-old giraffe named Oliver, now stands 10 feet tall.

SCOTT PRUITT SPENT $2,700 ON ‘TACTICAL’ PANTS AND POLOS _ Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, is up to his neck in ethics investigations and has been criticized even by some Republicans over his, shall we say, extravagant ways. Now, based on records released under the Freedom of Information Act, a source (Intercept) says Pruitt has spent more than $4.6 million in federal tax dollars on his own security — including more than $2,700 on “tactical pants” and “tactical polos.”

… Pruitt’s spending is far ahead of what past EPA directors have spent.

WE KNOW WITHIN 15 MINUTES IF THERE WILL BE A SECOND DATE _ It takes exactly 15 minutes to get the measure of someone on a first date, according to a study (by Badoo). Within the first quarter of an hour, if you laugh too loudly, are overly-complementary or turn up with a poem to hand, you can forget about having a second date.

WORLD’S UGLIEST DOG CONTEST _ The World’s Ugliest Dog will be crowned tomorrow (Saturday) at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California. Last year’s winner was Martha, a 3-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff.

MORE COFFEE? _ It’s enough to make a tea drinker buy an espresso machine. In a new study, scientists in Germany report that they were able to modify a common age-related defect in the hearts of mice with doses of caffeine equivalent to four to five cups of coffee a day for a human. The paper — the latest addition to a growing body of research that supports the health benefits of drinking coffee — describes how the molecular action of caffeine appears to enhance the function of heart cells and protect them from damage. It remains to be seen whether these findings will ultimately have any bearing on humans, but the lead researcher (Heinrich-Heine-University in Duesseldorf) says that “the old idea that you shouldn’t drink coffee if you have heart problems is clearly not the case anymore.” Previous research had suggested as much. For example, a 2017 report (in the Annual Review of Nutrition) found that coffee was associated with a probable decreased risk of cardiovascular disease — as well as type 2 diabetes and several kinds of cancer.

KANGAROOS ARE GETTING ‘DRUNK’ ON GRASS _ Wildlife authorities in Australia are struggling to deal with a spike in intoxicated kangaroos, and are being forced to euthanize the marsupials. The animals are getting “drunk” after eating phalaris grass — also known as canary grass. This intoxication causes strange behavior and can eventually advance to damage the central nervous system. A spokesperson for the Central Victoria Wildlife Rescue and Information Network said the organization is receiving as many as 10 calls each week reporting kangaroos showing symptoms of the illness.

BEAR FAMILY TAKES A SWIM IN CALIFORNIA FAMILY’S POOL _ A California family shared video of another family — a mother bear and her cubs — dropping by to use their backyard pool. The Mueller family shared video showing the mama bear and her two cubs swimming in the pool behind their home in the Pasadena area. The family said the bears swam for a short while before climbing out and leaving the area.

WOMAN BREAKS SPEED TEXTING RECORD _ A woman at an event in France broke a Guinness World Record by texting the alphabet in only 7.44 seconds. Rosie Baldwin was timed by a Guinness official this week (at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity) when she broke the record for fastest time to type the alphabet on a touchscreen mobile phone with only .16 seconds to spare.

MYSTERIOUS MOVING LUMP ON WOMAN’S FACE TURNED OUT TO BE A WORM _ Over five days, a 32-year-old woman in Russia took selfies to document a strange lump on her face that moved from under her left eye to above it and then later to her lip. She finally visited a physician who reported a “superficial moving oblong nodule at the left upper eyelid.” Turns out, she had a particular kind of parasitic worm, Dirofilaria repens, living under her skin. Humans are “accidental” hosts — in other words, not where the worms want to end up — and once a worm gets into a human, it typically can’t reproduce. • IMAGE

… The worms are spread by mosquito bites, and human cases have been reported in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. The Russian woman said she had recently traveled to a rural area outside Moscow and was frequently bitten by mosquitoes.

A BETTER WAY TO ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS OBJECTIVE _ Here’s a better way to achieve your weight loss objective — give yourself a broad goal. Instead of a specific number of pounds you’d like to lose, give yourself a range. For example, instead of making the goal 10 pounds, make your goal 8 to 12 pounds. Researchers discovered that 80% of the people who gave themselves a little flexibility with their goal ended up creating a plan to lose weight, or enroll in a program like Weight Watchers.

… Why? A range offers two anchor points that seem attainable, so you’re more likely to give it a shot. This also applies to other aspects of your life — like saving money.

… Here’s how to find that perfect weight loss goal: Think about how many pounds you were able to lose in the past — that’s your low number. The higher number is the one you feel you could hit if you really “pushed yourself.”

REMEMBER THIS? A YEAR AGO THIS WEEK: THERE’S AN APP FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE CONFLICTED ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA _ The only thing better than using social media is not using social media. That’s why there’s Binky, which is sort of both. Binky is an app that lets you go through the motions of social media — swiping on pictures, scrolling through pictures, commenting on pictures — without actually connecting with human beings. It’s an endless feed of pictures of things. It also gives you the illusion of choice by letting you type on a keyboard that generates comments with lots of hashtags and emoji. Binky creator Dan Kurtz says, “Binky is just as meaningless as other social media apps, but it’s upfront about it.” • LINK

BABY GIRL NAMES THAT USED TO BE POPULAR

If you’re looking through your family history hoping to come across a name that will make your little girl stand out, here are a few formerly popular names that are practically nonexistent now, according to the Social Security office, which tracks every new baby name.

• Betty: It has been on a steady decline since 1940.

• Ethel: Strong showing during the 1890s, hitting 8th place, slipped to 12th in the 1900s, then dropped to 80th the following decade and never recovered.

• Tammy: This female moniker skyrocketed out of nowhere in the 1960s and landed in the 13th spot. But by the 1990s, it was no longer in the top 200 and has all but disappeared since then.

• Dorothy: In the 1920s Dorothy was all the rage (way before The Wizard of Oz) and peaked in the No. 2 spot, but since then, this name has slipped significantly.

• Ida: This classic name was the 7th-most-popular female name during the 1880s, but then slipped into disuse in subsequent decades.

• Mildred: The name peaked at 6th place during the 1910s and held strong through the 1920s, but then went on a rapid decline.

• Edna: It never quite reached top 10 popularity, but it was a strong contender from the 1880s all the way through the 1920s before it started sounding old-fashioned.

• Gladys: Managed to crack the top 20 at the turn of the century, but dropped off by the 1910s.

• Florence: For almost five decades, Florence managed to stay in (or very close to the top 20), but by the 1930s, the name was losing favor.

• Bertha: In the 1880s, this name was the 8th-most-popular female name for the entire decade and then took a slow downturn.

• When you’re throwin’ your weight around, be ready to have it thrown around by somebody else.

• Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier ‘n puttin’ it back.

•  The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket.

• Never miss a good chance to shut up.

WORST THINGS YOU CAN SAY IN AN INTERVIEW

Tips from CareerBuilder.com

• “I hated my last boss.” Your last boss was a miserable person whose main concern was making your life miserable. Of course you don’t have a lot of nice things to say; however, don’t mistake honesty, which is admirable, for trash-talking, which is despicable.

• “I don’t know anything about the company.” Chances are the interviewer will ask what you know about the company. If you say you don’t know anything about it, the interviewer will wonder why you’re applying for the job and will probably conclude you’re after money, not a career.

• “No, I don’t have any questions for you.” Much like telling the interviewer that you don’t know anything about the company, saying you don’t have any questions to ask also signals a lack of interest. Perhaps the interviewer answered every question or concern you had about the position, but if you’re interested in a future with this employer, you can probably think of a few things to ask.

• “I’m going to need to take these days off.” We all have lives and commitments and any employer that you would even consider working for understands this. If you progress to an offer stage, this is the time for a discussion regarding personal obligations. Just don’t bring it up prior to the salary negotiation/offer stage. By mentioning the days you need off too early in the interview, you risk coming off presumptuous as if you know you’ll get the job.

• “How long until I get a promotion?” While you want to show that you’re goal-oriented, be certain you don’t come off as entitled or ready to leave behind a job you don’t even have yet. A more tactful route would be to ask the interviewer to explain the typical career path for the position.

• “Are you an active member in your church?” As you attempt to make small talk with an interviewer, don’t cross the line into inappropriate chitchat. Avoid topics that are controversial or that veer too much from work.

• “As Lady Macbeth so eloquently put it…” Scripted answers, although accurate, don’t impress interviewers. Not only do they make you sound rehearsed and stiff, they also prevent you from engaging in a dialogue.

• “And another thing I hate…” Save your rants for your blog. When you’re angry, you don’t sway anybody’s opinion about a topic, but you do make them like you less. For one thing, they might disagree with you. They also won’t take kindly to your bad attitude.
