NEWS & NUGGETS

WISCONSIN MAN CLAIMS $768 MILLION POWERBALL JACKPOT _ A 24-year-old Wisconsin man stepped forward to claim a $768 million Powerball prize on Tuesday. Manuel Franco, who lives in a Milwaukee suburb, pocketed the third-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. He bought the winning ticket, a quick pick, at a Speedway gas station on March 27, the day of the drawing. He opted for the $477 million cash option. After state and federal taxes, Franco will net $326 million.

… Franco said he’s hired a team of lawyers and financial advisers, and he promised not to blow his windfall on luxury items. He said he wants to travel, pay for college tuition of family members, and donate to charity.

ONE IN FIVE US KIDS DON’T DRINK WATER ON ANY GIVEN DAY _ Kids, teens and young adults who don’t drink water end up guzzling almost 100 extra calories a day from sugary beverages, according to a new study (Penn State University). About one-fifth of kids ages 2 to 19 in the survey reported no water intake on a given day.

… A 2016 American Heart Association report recommended that parents limit their children ages 2 to 18 to just eight ounces of sugar-sweetened drinks over seven days — in other words, less than one can of soda a week.

TO LIVE LONGER, MARRY A HAPPY PERSON _ Research suggests that having a happy spouse leads to a longer marriage, and now study results show that it’s associated with a longer life, too. Researchers (at Tilburg University) said spouses’ life satisfaction was an even better predictor of study participants’ mortality than participants’ own life satisfaction. Participants who had a happy partner at the beginning of the study were less likely to pass away over the next 8 years compared with participants who had less happy partners.

… Life satisfaction is known to be associated with behaviors that can affect health, including diet and exercise, and people who have a happy, active spouse, for example, are likely to have an active lifestyle themselves. The opposite is also likely to be true: If your partner is depressed and wants to spend the evening eating chips in front of the TV — that’s how your evening will probably end up looking as well.

WEALTHY PEOPLE HAVE MORE PESTICIDES IN THEM BECAUSE OF GOLF _ The wealthy have higher levels of pesticides in their bodies — because they play golf. They also have more mercury in their systems because they eat a lot of seafood. That’s according to a leading scientist in England (Michael Depledge at Exeter University). This doesn’t mean the bodies of the rich are more polluted — rich and poor suffer very different effects of pollution and their bodies are polluted by very different chemicals.

NASA RECORDED A MARSQUAKE AUDIO  A robot stationed on Mars has, for the first time, detected what’s thought to be a Marsquake. NASA’s InSight lander has been listening for faint rumbles beneath the surface since December, when it placed its seismometer down to begin the groundbreaking mission. In what scientists have hailed an exciting milestone, the InSight team says the lander measured and recorded a seismic signal on April 6.

HOMEOWNER TOLD TO REMOVE THOUSANDS OF BOXES FROM YARD _ A New Hampshire homeowner is under court order to clean up his yard that’s littered with thousands of boxes. If he doesn’t, the town will do it for him and stick him with the bill. The town of Brentwood, New Hampshire, estimates that there are around 2,000 boxes containing printers in the yard. No word as to why the homeowner (Michael Bates) has 2,000 boxed printers in his back yard.

AMERICANS SITTING MORE THAN EVER _ A new study has found the amount of time Americans spend sitting down has increased by an hour a day in recent years. Americans of all ages increasingly take life sitting down, but the study shows adolescents sit more than other groups. The study found adolescent Americans typically increased their total sitting time from seven hours to just over eight hours a day in the decade to 2016.

… What’s to blame? Everything. Longer commutes, more TV, more time on our smartphones and tablets.

… To counteract all the sitting, researchers say you need to be “highly-active” — like walking briskly for at least 10 hours per week or equivalent.

OBVIOUS: PEOPLE CHOOSE JUNK FOOD TO SATISFY THE MUNCHIES _ There’s a certain stereotype associated with ‘the munchies,’ one that describes a person who, after getting suitably high, gravitates toward junk food to satisfy their increased appetite. A new study looked at whether there’s an element of truth to this and the results are anything but surprising: most people experiencing ‘the munchies’ choose junk food over healthy alternatives.

… The study comes from researchers with the University of Buffalo. Though the findings are based on surveys, those surveys were administered to a group of people uniquely positioned to answer questions about the munchies: most of them were high at the time the surveys were given.

… The questionnaires were filled out by 275 people at the 2016 Hash Bash, an annual public event at the University of Michigan. In addition to questions about what they eat when under the influence of cannabis, the participants were also asked to state how intoxicated they were at the time the questionnaires were filled out.

COACHELLA PUPPY DUMPER CHARGED _ The California woman suspected of stuffing seven newborn puppies in a sealed plastic bag and casually tossing them in a dumpster has been charged with seven felony counts of animal cruelty. The charges were filed (by the Riverside County District Attorney) on Tuesday after animal services said it recovered a total of 38 other dogs at the woman’s property when she was arrested Monday.

… Deborah Sue Culwell, 54, was charged with seven felony counts of injuring the puppies and seven misdemeanor counts of abandoning them. She faces up to seven years behind bars if convicted as charged.

… Culwell is suspected of ditching the three-day-old dogs in the trash near a Napa Auto Parts store in Coachella last Thursday. The newborn puppies, believed to be terrier mixes, were quickly discovered by a good Samaritan who took them to the entrance of the store, where another man brought them inside. All of the puppies survived.

PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE CAREERS ARE SLASHIES _ Do you drive for Uber, blog your favorite recipes, work part-time at a flower shop AND do some dog walking on the side? Then you’re a “slashie.” When you’ve got more than one career and need to put a slash between each — chef/dogwalker/Uber driver — you’re known as a slashie.

… Some are slashies by choice — like teacher/private tutor/blogger. Others are slashies because they have to be.

RITE AID RAISES TOBACCO BUYING AGE TO 21, FOLLOWING WALGREENS’ LEAD _ Rite Aid will raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21 within the next 90 days. The company made the announcement Tuesday, hours after Walgreens said it would do the same.

WANT TO BE A GOOD PARENT? PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE _ A study sheds some light on the smartphone behavior of caregivers, and it isn’t pretty. Researchers observed 55 caregivers during meals at various restaurants in the Boston area, and 40 of them whipped out a device, which distracted them in varying degrees from the children in their care. While distractions are always a battle for caregivers, researchers say willfully engaging an inanimate object rather than human beings demonstrates, on a basic and unscientific level, a lack of compassion, empathy, and responsibility.

GOOGLE WINS FIRST FAA APPROVAL FOR REGULAR DRONE DELIVERY _ That annoying buzzing sound you hear overhead is your neighbor taking delivery of their new oven mitt. Or bottle of shampoo. Or office chair. Wing Aviation — a Google company — has received the first U.S. authorization to operate a fleet of unmanned aircraft for consumer-goods deliveries. Amazon and other companies are hoping for similar approvals to transport food and small consumer goods to residential customers.

… Tuesday’s green light by the FAA currently covers only a rural area around Blacksburg, Virginia. The company is expected to survey residents and local businesses about the types of food, medicines and other goods that might be carried exclusively during daylight hours.

HOSPITAL MIX-UP SENDS ‘SURVIVOR DAY’ INVITES TO KIDS WHO DIED FROM CANCER _ Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Florida is apologizing for sending an invitation for Cancer Survivor Day to at least one family who lost a child to cancer. A spokesperson said the hospital is still trying to figure out how it happened, attributing the mix-up to “clerical error.

… Holley Wade, who lives in Tampa, said the letter grabbed her attention immediately as she grabbed the mail Monday. The envelope from All Children’s was addressed to her son Daniel, who died in 2006.

COST OF ATTENDING A WEDDING IS UP _ Bouquets aren’t the only thing flying high at weddings this year. A recent study finds the average cost to attend a wedding is now over $1,100. That’s for travel, accommodations, gifts, a new dress or a suit/tux rental.

… Costs are slightly higher for members of the wedding party, an average of $1,400.

… In the coming episodes, all eyes will be on Holzhauer, a professional sports bettor, to see if he can surpass the all-time winnings record of $2.5 million set by Ken Jennings after 74 games in 2004.

WHEN TO PEE DURING AVENGERS: ENDGAME _ With a run time of just over 3 hours, it’s likely many in the audiences for Avengers: Endgame will need a pee break. CNET.com offers three possible times to make a quick break for the bathroom. Note: CNET suggest you go before the film — and this show suggests you not drink anything for six hours before you see it. Please consult your doctor before taking advice from this show.

• When the San Francisco title card comes on screen. If you made the crucial mistake of not peeing before the film, you won’t miss much if you duck out now. This Ant-Man segment is about 30 minutes into the film and is mostly just Scott connecting dots the audience already knows.

• When Hulk is having lunch. This scene is just over an hour into the film, and while it’s amusing, missing it isn’t a dealbreaker. The next 10 to 15 minutes after this scene is the safest window to empty your bladder.

• When the New Jersey title card comes on screen. There are no good spots to pee in the last hour of this film. Again, there are no good spots to pee during the last hour of this film. So if your bladder’s at the end of its rope, pee now. This segment is your last decent opportunity for a bathroom break. While it’s filled with nostalgia, you won’t be missing any real conflict and it’s fairly easy to fill in the blanks. Plus, if you pee fast enough, you’ll probably catch the tale end of the segment.
