CDC CONFIRMS FIRST U.S. CASE OF WUHAN CORONAVIRUS _ The United States has its first confirmed case of a new virus that appeared in China last month. The virus has already sickened hundreds and killed six people in Asia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says the male patient is in isolation at a medical center in Everett, Washington.
… The man traveled from Wuhan, China, to Washington, but said he did not attend the animal markets where many of the patients were infected. Officials are compiling a list of people the patient may have had contact with since his return to the United States. The Wuhan virus can spread person to person, but not nearly as easily as viruses such as measles or influenza.
… This reminds us of Contagion.
BEST AND WORST SUPER BOWLS _ USA Today has picked what it believes are the best and worst Super Bowls — and has ranked every other game as well.
… At the top is Super Bowl 51, in which the New England Patriots came back from a 25 point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots’ comeback is the largest in Super Bowl history and was the first to be decided in overtime.
CAN YOU STILL GET SUPER BOWL TICKETS? _ With the two best NFL teams in the Super Bowl, maybe it’s worth raiding your retirement fund for a trip to Miami. If you want to go tickets are still available, primary through sellers like the NFL and Ticketmaster. Some of the trusted secondary markets include Vivid Seats, StubHub and SeatGeek.
… Ticket prices on the primary market haven’t seen much change on the low end. They can still be snagged for as low as $4,4602.50 plus service fees. The same can’t be said for the high end benchmark. Tickets on the 50-yard line are going for as high as $40,000.
… Resale tickets appear to have been injected with the post-conference championship price boost as well. As of Tuesday, SeatGeek’s Super Bowl Resale Ticket Tracker reported the average price has jumped roughly 21 percent to a hair under $7,100.
… ALSO _ The Super Bowl is supposed to be in 4K. It will be, but kinda not.
ENCOURAGE NEW HABITS BY STACKING THEM _ Developing a new habit — or changing a bad one — takes a lot of work and patience. So instead of starting a new habit out of the blue, stack it on top of another habit you already have. Stanford University Behavior Scientist BJ Fogg suggests, for example, doing push-ups every time you use the restroom. He started just by doing one push-up every time he went, but over time he now does eight push-ups every time. Once you’ve stacked one habit, why not stack another? After you do push-ups — or whatever your version is — stack on having a glass of water.
WASH YOUR NEW CLOTHES BEFORE WEARING _ A lot of people buy clothes and immediately wear them without washing them, but a study shows this can be an unintentionally filthy habit. In a study of 14 items of recently purchased clothing, many of the clothes had pretty nasty germs on them.
SMART FIRE HYDRANT TECH SENSES WATER THEFT, TERROR _ The lowly fire hydrant is about to go high-tech. A company in Israel has developed a smart “electronic bracelet” that attaches to the nozzle of a fire hydrant to monitor what comes out and what goes in. If water is flowing out, it’s theft. If the direction of the water is the opposite, it can be dangerous — like someone trying to mess with the water.
… Each Hydrantech electronic bracelet has a cellular transmitter that communicates its status to a central control hub. That allows a city to spot a problem — whether it’s a leak or a biopotential terror attack — in real time and send a technician or security detail immediately.
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WARNS OF FALLING IGUANAS _ Freeze warnings and hard freeze warnings are in effect across Florida and Georgia through this (Wednesday) morning. Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Miami issued a rare forecast regarding cold temperatures … was for iguanas. The NWS tweeted: “Don’t be surprised if you see iguanas falling from the trees tonight … as lows drop into the 30s and 40s.” The iguanas often sleep in trees, so when their bodies go dormant, they appear to fall from the sky onto streets, cars, pools, or even people walking around. And since iguanas are large — adult males can reach 5 feet in length, and weigh up to 20 pounds — this can be dangerous if one lands on top of you.
… The invasive species can’t handle cold temperatures very well because they are cold-blooded. In general, iguanas begin to get sluggish or lethargic once the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
… By the way, this was also happening in January of 2018: IMAGE

MAKING BOOKS ‘MORE PORTABLE’ HAS DIVIDED THE INTERNET _ Long reads can be daunting — an lugging around a hefty novel is not picnic. That’s the dilemma that was faced by a resourceful reader who decided to take matters into his own hands by cutting their long read in half. Alex Christofi took to Twitter on Tuesday to share how he makes books “more portable,” also divulging that his practice of splitting books in half has earned him the abject disgust of a colleague, who proclaimed him a “book murderer”.
WOMAN SPOTS MOLE IN MAN’S TIKTOK VIDEO, SAVES HIM FROM CANCER _ TikTok creator Alex Griswold says a fellow user on the platform may have saved his life. After sharing a video about his marriage, Griswold learned his mole could potentially lead to cancer. The video, titled “Here’s what it’s like being married,” shares the raw truths of married life, like “complimenting each other’s farts” and having a “sleepover” with your best friend every day. During one example, “backscratching always turns into pimple popping sessions,” the camera shows Griswold’s partner squeezing two moles on his back.
… At first glance, it looks like an ordinary mole. But two of his followers expressed concern. Lizzie Wells, a melanoma survivor from California, immediately spotted something that she herself had beat. Griswold said he took her advice seriously when she DMed him on Instagram and got the mole checked by a dermatologist. Sure enough, the doctors said after receiving test results the “moderately atypical” mole was likely headed towards cancer. He got the mole removed.

TWO MEN, TWO SLICES OF BREAD AND 7,906 MILES OF FILLING _ An Auckland university student has created an “earth sandwich” with a stranger in Spain, after a long search for an accomplice. Etienne Naude placed a slice of white bread on the ground at Bucklands Beach in Auckland, New Zealand, using longitude and latitude to ensure he was precisely opposite a volunteer he had found in the south of Spain after posting for help on Reddit. The two men — total strangers — had 7,906 miles of earth between them, creating an “earth sandwich.” Naude said making an earth sandwich was a long-term goal of his, but he’d struggled to find someone on the other side of the world who was willing to lend a hand, and a slice of bread.
REMEMBER THIS? A YEAR AGO THIS WEEK: WIFE’S HAPPINESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HUSBAND’S _ Men often joke about it, but the idea ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’ does, in fact, hold some real validity. A study (Rutgers University) found that a wife’s happiness is more vital than that of her husband’s in keeping a marriage happy and healthy. The study, which surveyed older couples married for an average of 39 years, concluded that the happier a wife is in the relationship, the happier the husband is with his life regardless of what he feels or even thinks about the relationship itself.
… The study’s lead researcher Deborah Carr) further explained: “I think it comes down to the fact that when a wife is satisfied with the marriage she tends to do a lot more for her husband, which has a positive effect on his life. Men tend to be less vocal about their relationships and their level of marital unhappiness might not be translated to their wives.” Because men tend to be less vocal within their relationships, wives may not always notice dissatisfaction that their husbands may be experiencing in their marriage.
