CDC ADDS 6 NEW CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS _ The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added six new symptoms to its official list of COVID-19 symptoms Sunday, as the medical community continues to report new presentations of the virus. The new symptoms are chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, in addition to previously known symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
… The symptoms can appear two to 14 days after exposure to COVID-19, according to CDC guidelines.
… In addition, the CDC described a set of emergency warning signs that should warrant immediate medical attention, including trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, bluish lips or face.
WOMAN WHO’S FAMILY WAS TOLD SHE DIED OF COVID-19 FOUND ALIVE _ A 74-year-old woman from Ecuador who was thought to have been dead of the coronavirus was actually found alive. Due to a hospital mix-up, doctors told the woman’s family on March 27 that she had passed away. She was later discovered to be alive after all.
… After the family was informed of the heartbreaking news that their loved one had died, they were permitted a visit to the hospital morgue. They were even shown a body that they had been told was the woman. However, as a safety precaution to prevent the spread of the virus, the family was not able to get close enough to recognize that the body was that of a stranger.
… As it turned out, the entire time the woman was believed to be dead, she was really in a coma. She woke up from her coma after three weeks this past Thursday.
… While the family is overjoyed that their loved one is alive, they want to know who’s ashes they received.
10 MILLION GALLONS OF BEER ARE ABOUT TO BE POURED DOWN THE DRAIN _ Citizens of the world, it’s time to do your part for your countries and drink more beer. Million of gallons of beer on the verge of being poured down the drain thanks to the lack of demand caused by Coronavirus. It’s really simple: Bars, restaurants, venues, etc. expect a lot of beer consumption each month, and brewers make the beer to meet that demand. But because coronavirus shut down bars and restaurants we have a tons of beer with nowhere to go.
… At the most, draft beer will stay good for 6 months, and sometimes depending on the kind of brew, the shelf life can be as short as 2 months. Now that everything is closed down, there are roughly 10 million gallons (or about one million kegs) worth of beer going to waste in empty bars and venues, and even more in distributor warehouses.
1,000 PEOPLE ATTEND HOUSE PARTY IN CHICAGO _ What is going to make it harder for us to beat coronavirus is reckless conduct, from the simple stuff like people not washing their hands, to large gatherings like a 1,000-person house party. That happened in Chicago over the weekend, and now cops are investigating.
TEXAS MAYOR IGNORED STAY-AT-HOME ORDER TO VISIT A NAIL SALON _ A Texas mayor is apologizing to her constituents after breaking her own stay-at-home order so she could pay a visit to a nail salon. Becky Ames, the mayor of Beaumont in the southern part of the state, issued an apology after a photo showed her wearing a face mask while sitting in a nail salon. Ames initially told a local TV station that she did go to The Nail Bar but said she had talked to the owner about removing an old manicure set and did not interact with any employees. Ames said that she also needed acetone, and said the owner was planning to leave it out for her. The picture showed Ames sitting at a table with her hands in a bowl of water, which she said the owner left out so she could remove the previous manicure. The Texas mayor was criticized for the visit, especially as she had put in place stay-at-home order meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
ECONOMY TANKS, BIRTH RATES DROP _ Will there be a COVID-19 baby boom in nine months? Probably not. According to research that looked at what happened after the Great Recession, birth rates in the United States began to decline in 2008 after rising to their highest level in two decades, and continued to fall during the first six months of 2009.
… Baby product sales figures have likewise followed economic trends. Sales of baby and youth products rose between 2004 and 2009 but once adjusted for inflation, that figure actually dropped 4 percent.
HAWAII TO VISITORS: WE’LL PAY YOU TO LEAVE _ In Hawaii, the spirit of aloha normally greets visitors with warmth and welcome. Now, while the state has discouraged visitors by requiring them to self-quarantine for 14 days, that culture of generosity might extend to a free return ticket home. With a $25,000 grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the nonprofit Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii (VASH) has instituted a COVID-19 flight assistance program to return travelers who don’t have the means to follow the mandatory 14-day quarantine — including paying for lodging and food delivery — required of incoming visitors.
… Since launching the program the organization has sent 20 visitors to their airport of origin, including travelers from Guam, Los Angeles, Birmingham, Alabama, and Denver.
CANDIDATE FOR UTAH GOVERNOR PICKED HIS DAD AS HIS RUNNING MATE _ Three of the candidates vying to win the Democratic nomination for Utah governor have announced their picks for running mates. One of them, Nikki Ray Pino, announced an eyebrow-raising candidate in a YouTube video: his father, Nikki Ray Pino Sr.
$500K BET ON ROCK PAPER SCISSORS RULED INVALID BY COURT _ A Superior Court in Canada (Quebec) has ruled a $500,000 debt incurred from three games of rock paper scissors is invalid. The loser of the RPS game was Edmund Mark Hooper. To pay for his losses he took out a mortgage on his house. But the Superior Court cancelled that mortgage. Quebec law stipulates that for a wagering contract to be valid, it must be related to activities “requiring only skill or bodily exertion on the part of the parties,” rather than to chance. Furthermore, the amount wagered must not be excessive.
… After the Superior Court cancelled the mortgage in 2017, it was appealed by Michel Primeau, who beat Hooper in the game of rock paper scissors. The appeals court reached a slightly different conclusion. While it found the game may call up a certain measure of skill, “it seems evident … that the game also involves a large part of chance, so that it does not take ‘only skill or bodily exertion on the part of the parties.'” The appeals court also upheld the lower court’s conclusion that the $500,000 wager was excessive.
… The best-of-three game took place in January 2011.
SCIENTISTS DETERMINE THE HEALTHIEST WAY TO MAKE COFFEE _ Most coffee enthusiasts have a preferred method when it comes to brewing a cup of java. Some people like their coffee brewed in a Mr. Coffee machine, others prefer a slow brew in a French press. And while some enjoy the intensity of a fresh espresso, others are happy with a simple cup of the instant kind. But is one type better for your body than others? Perhaps so: a new study suggests that filtered coffee is the healthiest way to brew coffee.
… About 30 years ago a professor with University of Gothenburg in Sweden made the discovery too much coffee is associated with higher levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the bad kind). In total, researched studied 508,747 healthy men and women aged 20-79 and had participants complete questionnaires about how much coffee they drink and the way they brew their usual cup. Participants also provided information about their lifestyle habits, education, height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. — things that might influence their coffee consumption and heart health.
… Researchers tracked participants for an average of 20 years. One of the results of the long-term study shows that drinking filtered coffee is safer than drinking no coffee at all. Filtered coffee was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of death from any cause, when compared to drinking no coffee. Further analysis of cardiovascular disease deaths shows that going filtered is linked to a 12 percent lower risk in men and 20 percent lower risk in women.
… Drinking unfiltered coffee does not raise the risk of death when compared with drinking no coffee, but it is worse than going filtered. Overall, those that drink up to four cups of coffee a day were found to have the lowest mortality.
FOUR HABITS CAN AGE YOU BY 12 YEARS _ A study which tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years found these four common bad habits combined can age you by 12 years: smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet.
HERE’S THE MIDLIFE CRISIS AGE _ Music streaming service Spotify pin-pointed the average age of midlife crises as 42. Staff analyzed data and found that users around 42 drop their usual playlists — which usually contain hits from their youth — in favor of today’s hits.
PLAY IT COOL WHEN A CHILD FALLS AND LOOKS AT YOU _ It’s hard not to wince when you see someone fall, hit their head, or run into someone. When a child does it, they’ll usually look to an adult to see how they should react. For this reason, it’s best to keep it cool. Often, when a child falls there’s a delay and they look at you — waiting for your reaction. You freak out, making them think something terrible has happened, so they start crying.
… Instead, wait and see what they do. If they seem OK, help them up if they are still down. Let them go back to playing. After all, falling down is part of being a kid, and usually not an event. Don’t make it into one. If they are hurt, it’s even more important not to freak out. What a scared kid needs is someone who is in control and taking care of things. Give them first aid or take them to the emergency room, calmly.
DEPRESSED PEOPLE EAT MORE CHOCOLATE _ Researchers (University of California) say people who are depressed eat more chocolate than people who are not. They said people who were depressed ate an average of 8.4 servings of chocolate per month, compared with 5.4 servings among those who were not. And people who had major depression based on results of a screening test ate even more — 11.8 servings per month. A serving was considered to be one small bar, or 1 ounce. What the study could not say was why people who are depressed eat more chocolate.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BANDIT SKATES OFF AFTER DUNKIN’ DONUTS STICKUP _ A guy robbed a Dunkin’ Donuts on Long Island, New York, and skated away. The robber was wearing in-line skates and got away with an undetermined amount of cash.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: HALF-NAKED ‘OTHER WOMAN’ SPOTTED IN BACKGROUND DURING VIDEO CALL _ A Spanish journalist was on a video call where he was talking about the coronavirus crisis. The video has gone viral, but not for his opinions on the situation. It went viral because a half-naked woman, wearing only underwear, walked past in the background. The woman wasn’t a woman he has been dating since the end of last year — It was another woman.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN BUSTED FOR TAKING HIS FISH ON A WALK DURING PANDEMIC _ In Spain, a man was trying to take advantage of a rule allowing pet owners to leave their homes so that the pets can relieve themselves. The man was busted for taking his pet fish on a walk in its bowl. Police tweeted a picture of the suspect sitting on a bench with his finned friend. Last month, police in Spain caught a man in a T-rex costume roaming the city streets.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BURGLAR MAKES TATER TOTS, NAPS ON COUCH _ A hungry California burglar broke into a home on a thieving mission, but got distracted when he found tater tots in the freezer. He made a snack, fell asleep and got busted when the homeowner found him napping on the couch.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: THIEVES STEAL CEMENT ROAD _ Two men who dug up a 1,300-foot cement road and sold it for profit have been arrested by police in China. The men used an excavator to break up the cement road and sold the 630 tons to a local factory.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: KNIFE IN THE FACE _ In Russia a man had invited a buddy over for a few drinks but went to bed early after telling his friend he was tired of hearing him complain. The man woke up later that night with a splitting headache and went to the bathroom to get a glass of water — and that’s when he noticed a knife sticking out of his face, just below his eye. After calling for an ambulance, the knife was removed during an operation. Police found the friend’s fingerprints on the knife.

CHRIS PRATT, KATHERINE SCHWARZENEGGER EXPECTING FIRST BABY _ Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger are expecting their first child together. The couple will celebrate their first wedding anniversary on June 8. Pratt (40) has a 7-year-old son Jack with his ex-wife, actress Anna Faris. Schwarzenegger (30) is the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and broadcast journalist Maria Shriver. She recently wrote the book, The Gift of Forgiveness.
BRAD PITT, MILEY CYRUS APPEAR ON ‘SNL AT HOME’ _ Oscar winner Brad Pitt and pop star Miley Cyrus appeared remotely from their houses on the weekend’s edition of Saturday Night Live At Home. Pitt played Dr. Anthony Fauci, leader of the White House’s coronavirus task force, in the show’s 3-minute cold open. He began his appearance by thanking his female admirers for their “supportive, inspiring and sometimes graphic emails.”

TOM HANKS’ BLOOD BEING USED TO DEVELOP CORONAVIRUS VACCINE _ Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were diagnosed with COVID-19 last month and were one of the first high-profile cases of the virus to be publicly announced. The couple recovered fairly quickly after self-quarantining in Australia and were back home in the US in no time. Tom says that he and his wife are donating blood to help find a vaccine. After learning that they carried the correct antibodies, they’re now more than willing to give blood and help researchers find a cure for the virus.
… Of course, there’s no telling if a cure will be found from their blood, but if there is one discovered, the Toy Story star has already come up with a name for it: the “Hankccine.”
THE OFFICE CAST WILL HAVE COFFEE WITH A FAN OVER A VIDEO CALL TO SUPPORT CHARITY _ A few cast members from The Office’s have teamed up for charity. Omaze, an online fundraising platform for non-profits, is currently offering one fan the chance to attend a virtual coffee date with four cast members of The Office. Dunder Mifflin’s Oscar, Creed, Meredith, and Jan will all sign on to a video call with the lucky winner to answer all his or her burning questions about the series. THE PARKS AND RECREATION CAST IS REUNITING FOR A CHARITY SPECIAL _ Five years after its finale, NBC’s Parks and Recreation is returning for a scripted special to raise funds for Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund. KELLY OSBOURNE GIVEN ALL-CLEAR AFTER CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS _ Kelly Osbourne is clear of COVID-19 after previously revealing she was “showing symptoms” of the virus. The 35-year-old former Fashion Police co-host revealed on Friday that her test was negative, and she has finally been able to reunite with her brother Jack.
… Kelly says she was told to get tested after being exposed and showing symptoms, especially because Jack has multiple sclerosis and her father has Parkinson’s.
EXTRACTION SEQUEL REPORTEDLY IN DEVELOPMENT _ It’s been only a few days since Extraction hit Netflix and the movie has already become a hit. Not only is it the most popular film on the streaming service, but it’s also number one on Netflix’s overall Top 10. And as one might expect, there’s now talk of a sequel. According to sources Netflix had signed a deal with the Russo brothers that included sequel options. While this was presumably contingent on the movie being successful, it’s certainly been a big hit and now the plan is to push forward with another one.
KRISTIN CAVALLARI AND JAY CUTLER ANNOUNCE DIVORCE _ Kristin Cavallari shared on Instagram Sunday the sad news that she and Jay Cutler have decided to divorce. The two have been together for nearly a decade and share three kids — Camden Jack Cutler (7), Jaxon Wyatt Cutler (5) and Saylor James Cutler (4). Cavallari wrote in her post: “We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart.”
