IT HAPPENED TODAY
• 1890: Artist Vincent van Gogh died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Auvers, France, at age 37.
• 1914: Transcontinental telephone service began with the first phone conversation between New York and San Francisco.
• 1945: Japanese warships sank the American cruiser Indianapolis. Just before midnight the Indianapolis was on its way, unescorted, to Guam, then Okinawa. It was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. There were 1,196 crewmen onboard the Indianapolis; over 350 died upon impact of the torpedo or went down with the ship. More than 800 fell into the Pacific. Of those, approximately 50 died that first night in the water from injuries suffered in the torpedo explosion; the remaining seamen were left to flounder in the Pacific, fend off sharks, drink sea water (which drove some insane), and wait to be rescued. Because there was no time for a distress signal before the Indianapolis went down, it was 84 hours before help arrived. Only 318 survived; the rest were eaten by sharks or drowned. This is the U.S. Navy’s worst loss at sea.
• 1957: Jack Paar made his debut as host of NBC’s Tonight show.
• 1965: The Beatles’ second film, Help, had its royal premiere at London’s Pavilion Theatre.
• 1975: President Gerald R. Ford became the first U.S. president to visit the site of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz in Poland.
• 1981: Britain’s Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
• 1987: Ben and Jerry’s began selling Cherry Garcia ice cream, in honor of Grateful Dead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia.
• 2000: Brad Pitt married Jennifer Aniston in Malibu, California. They separated after four and a half years of marriage.
• 2003: Boston Red Sox batter Bill Mueller became the first player in major league history to hit grand slams from both sides of the plate in a single game in a 14-7 win at Texas.
• 2004: In Chumuckla, Florida, the volunteer firefighters were called to respond to a fire alarm. As soon as they heard the address, they knew they were in trouble. Turns out that the building that was on fire was the firehouse. The first firefighter got there soon enough to save two fire trucks, but the rest of the firehouse was lost to the blaze within a half hour.
• 2006: In England, a brick was been used to smash in the front door of a bookstore run by the British charity Oxfam. So what did the charity do to pay for the damage? It auctioned off the offending brick for $420, which was nearly enough to cover the damage.
• 2006: Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock were married in St. Tropez, France. They both filed for divorce four months later.

NEWS ATTACK!
Dollar Tree has purchased Family Dollar. [They haven’t decided whether to name the new company Family Tree or Dollar Dollar.]
New York City police officers working Times Square had no choice but to arrest a man dressed as Spider-Man after he slugged a cop. [Sounds like Spidey was a little testy after losing another battle with his arch-nemesis, Bartender-Man.]
The Korean baseball team Hanwha Eagles have lost 400 games in the past 5 years so it doesn’t have too many fans at its games. What it does have is robots. Robots sit in the stands and transmit the games to any loyal fans watching on their smartphones. Fans can also use their smartphones to control the robots. [For example, the other day a robot pushed a 5-year-old girl out of the way in order to catch a foul ball.]
That terrorist group ISIS (aka Islamic State) has opened a marriage service to help its fighters find Mrs. Right. [“We’re perfect for each other. She irrationally hates all the same people I irrationally hate.”]
That Texas dad whose invention inflates and ties 100 water balloons in only a minute is racking up big bucks on Kickstarter. [Which means that America is definitely ready should World War III be fought poolside.]
A new study finds that if you want your young children to be honest, it’s more effective to tell them stories about the positive outcome of telling the truth rather than the negative result of telling lies. [In other words, read them the story of George Washington and the cherry tree, and skip the adventures of Lance Armstrong.]
A senior North Korean military official threatened to drop nuclear bombs on the US. [Uh-oh. He just made a career-ending mistake. Never say anything publicly that will make your boss look less crazy than you are.]
Have you seen that new movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Hercules? [It’s basically The Hulk in sandals.]
Freddie Prinze, Jr. says that working alongside an unprofessional Kiefer Sutherland was so horrible that it made him consider quitting acting all together. [Now if we could just get Kiefer Sutherland to work with Katherine Heigl.]
NEWS & NUGGETS
YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE ISN’T VERY SECURE _ Antivirus software is often just as insecure as the software it’s meant to protect — and running it might make you even more insecure. At a security conference in Beijing (SyScan 360) a researcher claimed to have found flaws in antivirus engines found at the hearts of many major antivirus software products, including those made by Avast, Bitdefender, Avira, AVG, Comodo, ClamAV, DrWeb, ESET, F-Prot, F-Secure, Panda and eScan. The security researcher identified bugs in 17 major antivirus programs. Some companies, such as Avast and ESET, had already patched their software, but others allegedly had not.
LIFELOCK CEO’s IDENTITY STOLEN 13 TIMES _ Apparently, when you publish your Social Security number prominently on your website and billboards, people take it as an invitation to steal your identity. LifeLock CEO Todd Davis, whose number is displayed in the company’s advertisements, has by now learned that lesson. He’s been a victim of identity theft at least 13 times. That’s 12 more times than has previously been known, according to the Phoenix New Times.
… In June 2007, Threat Level reported that Davis had been the victim of identity theft after someone used his identity to obtain a $500 loan from a check-cashing company. Davis discovered the crime only after the company called his wife’s cellphone to recover the unpaid debt. About four months after that story published, Davis’ identity was stolen again by someone in Albany, Georgia, who opened an wireless account using his Social Security number. The perpetrator racked up $2,390 in charges on the account, which remained unpaid. Davis, whose real name according to police reports is Richard Todd Davis, only learned a year later that his identity had been stolen again after AT&T handed off the debt to a collection agency and a note appeared on his credit report. Then last year, Davis discovered seven more fraudulent accounts on his credit report that were opened with his personal information and have outstanding debt.
KOALA BEAR RIDES 55 MILES UNDER CAR _ An Australian koala bear suffered only a minor injury after it was struck by a car, and rode 55 miles hanging on to the bottom of the vehicle. A veterinarian only needed to treat the poor creature for a broken nail.
NEW MOM SAYS BIGGER CHEST MADE HER A BETTER PARENT _ 19-year-old Tamsin Wade is proud to say: “I’m a better mum after having a boob job!” The British mother took out a loan for her 32G implants after her breast size went from D-cup to AA-cup after she had her son. Realizing the affect her low self esteem was having on her son, Tamsin took out a loan to pay for the $8,000 surgery, and now believes she’s a better mother thanks to her new assets. How? “I was forced to wear baggy clothes to hide my figure and getting into a bikini made me feel so uncomfortable that me and Finley had never been swimming. I started to shy away from going out at all as I just felt so bad about myself.” But since having the surgery Tamsin has her confidence back, allowing her to hit the pool and join new toddler groups with her son. | Is Tamsin a “better” mom? See for yourself. (Mostly SFW pics.)
OKCUPID CONDUCTS SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS ON LOVE _ According to a blog post on the dating site OkCupid, like Facebook founder Christian Rudder admitted that they’ve tried various experiments on their users too. But Rudder says bluntly: “Guess what, everybody: if you use the Internet, you’re the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That’s how websites work.” The post then went on to describe some of the site’s experiments.
… In one experiment to test if love really is blind, they temporarily removed user’s photos from their profiles to see how it would affect their interactions. Unsurprisingly, the site’s traffic went down significantly. However men and women who actually tried out a “blind” date reported having a good time regardless of how attractive their date was. They also discovered that women who went on dates with more attractive men were reportedly less happy than those who went on dates with less attractive men.
… Rudder pointed out that once the photos were restored the same women went back to relying on looks to dictate whether or not they responded to messages, concluding that “people are exactly as shallow as their technology allows them to be.”
… Another experiment tried to ascertain if there was a correlation between how users scored each other for looks and personality based on photos of people they found attractive. Not surprisingly users rated other people higher if they found the photo attractive, even if the rest of their profile was blank.
… Finally they tested if people were more likely to contact and interact with someone simply based upon an OkCupid recommendation saying they were highly compatible (even if the site’s own metrics indicated the reverse was actually the case). The study found users who were told they were well-matched were much more likely to exchange messages and interact with one another, even if they were actually incompatible by the site’s own metrics.

NEW CALIFORNIA LAW LETS UNDERAGE STUDENTS TASTE ALCOHOL _ Underage college students in California enrolled in beer brewing or winemaking classes are now legally allowed to drink alcohol during lessons, provided they spit it out after sampling. On Monday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed what’s come to be known as the sip and spit law, allowing students at the nation’s top enology and viniculture schools to taste alcoholic beverages as part of their culinary curriculum.
PEOPLE ARE PAYING $800 FOR SNEAKERS _ Back-to-school shopping means overpriced sneakers for many parents. But while $80 – $150 seems silly for a kid who will likely wear them out in 3 months, imagine buying him an $800 pair. That’s Jon Buscemi sneakers go for — at the bottom end. Since debuting online a year ago, Buscemi shoes have sold out so fast that they’re almost always out of stock. Their single-color, all-leather design features tiny golden padlocks that hang from the ankle straps. Yeah, this is a ridiculous gimmick, but apparently it’s working because Buscemi shoes keep selling out. And it doesn’t hurt that you have celebrinots like Justin Bieber and Sean “Diddy” Combs tweeting photos of their new Buscemis to followers. The ever-classy Combs tweeted to his 9 million followers: “You ain’t got THESE!”
SPANISH CITY BANS OUTDOOR NOISE _ Sports fans will have to keep their cheering toned down, children will have to play quietly, and car enthusiasts can’t rev their engines to impress their friends after Seville, Spain, passed regulations to make the town a little more quiet. The regulations passed ban: domino games outside, singing in the street, playing loud music as you drive, unnecessary revving of the engine, a car alarm sounding for more than three minutes, bars with outdoor televisions, rolling kegs and pulling chairs on outdoor patios, serving bar patrons who are standing up outdoors, and even “excessively loud” conversations. The fines for noise violations range from $403 to $400,000.

The pair hit the ground when the lightning struck and then were able to keep going after they realized they were OK.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: NAKED WOMAN JUMPS OUT OF CAR _ Two traffic officers stopped a car in Ufa, Russia, as part of a routine documents check. As one officer walked to talk to the driver, the passenger door opened and a young woman, wearing only shoes and socks, leapt out and ran off into oncoming traffic. Unable to follow as cars veered left and right, the police officers could only stand and watch in amazement as she then crossed over to the other side of the road and head down the busy street. The woman was eventually caught by police and taken to hospital to undergo drug and alcohol tests.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: 40,000 POUNDS OF FRUIT SPILLS ON HIGHWAY _ A tractor-trailer overturned on the highway outside San Francisco early Monday morning, spilling over 40,000 pounds of fruit on the highway and causing massive traffic delays. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: TRACK BUILT WITH 90 DEGREE TURNS _ Officials in China built a rectangular running track because they were concerned they wouldn’t get an oval one finished in time for a Communist Party inspection. The bizarre track was built as a part of a major refurbishment of a 10,000 square foot stadium (in Tonghe County). With the big-budget project running behind schedule and an inspection by notoriously finicky Communist Party officials imminent, managers made the decision to quite literally cut corners and create a running track with awkward 90-degree turns because they’re easier to measure and lay out.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: COUPLE FILES PETITION TO CHANGE MIDDLE NAMES TO SEAMONSTER _ A husband and wife in Holyoke, Massachusetts, have changed their middle names to the same thing: Seamonster. Melanie Ann Convery filed a petition with the state requesting that she and her husband, Neal James Coughlin, be allowed to change their names to Melanie Seamonster Convery and Neal James Seamonster Coughlin. Why the change of name? Melanie Ann declined to say. The laws in Massachusetts state: “The change of name of a person shall be granted unless such change is inconsistent with public interests.”
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: PET FROG SWALLOWS ENGAGEMENT RING _ Russian guy Roman Livane was cleaning out the glass aquarium where he keeps his pet frog, Croak. Roman asked his girlfriend to look after Croak while he cleaned the aquarium. She was playing with her engagement ring, dropped it and it fell in front of Croak. He snapped it up and swallowed it. They took Croak to a local vet who x-rayed him. Since there was no way Croak was going to pass the ring, and surgery would kill Croak, the vet opted to fetch the jewelry with a special hook.

The future Mrs. Donnie Wahlberg described her son as a strict “rule follower” when sharing the anecdote on her new satellite radio show Dirty Sexy Funny: “We’re driving in the car and of course I text and drive. KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR COULD HIT THEATERS IN 2015 _ Along with news that Quentin Tarantino is definitely preparing to shoot The Hateful Eight and might have a sci-fi project up his sleeve, there might be another treat in store for fans of the filmmaker. Speaking at Comic-Con he was asked if audiences in the United States would ever get a chance to see Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, the original longer Cannes Film Festival cut from 2003 instead of the two-volume split we got over two separate years. And the good news is Tarantino says there have been talks with The Weinstein Company to finally release it in limited theaters, maybe as early as next year.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND RESPONDS TO FREDDIE PRINZE JR.’S DISS _Kiefer Sutherland is responding to Freddie Prinze Jr.’s epic diss. While at Comic-Con over the weekend, Prinze blasted Sutherland and said working with him on the show 24 in 2010 made him want to quit acting. So what does Sutherland think of Prinze’s major shade? Sutherland’s rep said, “Kiefer worked with Freddie Prinze Jr. more than 5 years ago, and this is the first he has heard of Freddie’s grievances. Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best.”
… Among Prinze’s choice words for Sutherland: “I did 24. It was terrible. I hated every moment of it. Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That’s not me talking trash; I’d say it to his face. I think everyone that’s worked with him has said that.” The actor added, “I just wanted to quit the business after that. So, I just sort of stopped.”
JUSTIN BIEBER & MAKE-A-WISH _ Justin Bieber did something amazing this week, and we’re in shock. The 20-year-old singer was presented with the Champ of Charity Award for his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the 16th Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night, only to give it away moments later.
