JUDGE, NOT ARMCHAIR SERIAL DETECTIVES, TO DECIDE RETRIAL _ Prompted by a podcast that turned millions of listeners into armchair detectives, a judge will now decide whether to grant a new trial to a man convicted as a teenager of murdering his high school girlfriend. A defense lawyer argued Tuesday that the evidence brought to light by the Serial podcast and now presented in court proves that Adnan Syed had an unfair trial after the 1999 strangling death of Hae Min Lee.

… In court the lawyer cited numerous issues raised by the podcast and presented during this hearing, including the facts that a key alibi witness was never called, and that some cell phone data was misrepresented as reliably linking his client to the crime.

TWIN SISTERS IN NEW JERSEY GIVE BIRTH TO GIRLS MINUTES APART _ Twin sisters in New Jersey have given birth to girls just minutes apart at the same hospital. Edington says she and her sister were both due to deliver their children on Friday. But Edginton was told to go to the hospital for labor while she was at a doctor’s appointment. TITANIC II DELAYED _ A fully-functioning replica of the Titanic will be launched in 2018, two years later than initially planned. A spokesman for the Australian billionaire funding the project (Clive Palmer) said that the project had merely been delayed and not abandoned. Titanic II will look virtually identical to the Belfast-built luxury liner which sank in April 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage, but the ship will have some modern improvements. The ship will be four meters wider in order to meet today’s maritime safety regulations, and the hull will be welded, not riveted.

… The new Titanic will, of course, have modern evacuation procedures, satellite controls, digital navigation and radar systems. Titanic II, which will offer first, second and third-class tickets, will have nine floors and 840 cabins capable of accommodating 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members, along with Turkish baths, a swimming pool and gymnasiums. The new ship’s maiden voyage will not follow the original Titanic’s planned route from England to New York.

PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO MUSIC OUT LOUD HAVE MORE SEX _ If your home is filled with music, it may also be full of togetherness, happiness — and a little more sex. For the study, 30 families got a Sonos sound system and an Apple Music subscription. They also tricked out the homes with Apple iBeacons to get proximity data, Smart watches to measure steps and heart rate and web cams to capture how people lived with and without music. In the two-week study, families spent the first week as they always do, without music played aloud. The second week, they lived with the Sonos system and Apple Music, and played 8,124 songs over the course of more than 44,000 hours of logged activity.

… With music being played aloud, families reported spending 13% more time together and were in closer proximity to each other (20% more of the time). Globally, the music listeners reported having 67% more sex.

WHAT MAKES A SONG A HIT _ The mystery of what makes a song a hit has perplexed songwriters and record companies for a long time. But a study has come up with an intriguing clue: People will select a song if they think others like it. In other words, at least one key to musical success is the buzz, or bandwagon effect. (Study author Duncan J. Watts in journal Science)

WHAT A McDONALD’S HAPPY MEAL LOOKS LIKE AFTER 6 YEARS _ Everything about the food at McDonald’s is fast — it’s made fast, cooked fast, and usually consumed fast — except for one thing: the rate at which it decomposes. How on Earth do we know that? Well, a woman named Jennifer Lovdahl posted photos on Facebook claiming to show a six-year-old McDonald’s Happy Meal — and it’s pretty disturbing. Not because it’s become a furry, moldy mess inhabited by creepy-crawlies, but because nothing has really changed. The photos show four chicken nuggets, an order of slightly shriveled french fries, and an accompanying receipt dated January 8, 2010. And they look like they could have been ordered yesterday. Lovdahl said she let the food sit for years in order to show people just how unnatural McDonald’s food is. | IMAGE

MARS REMOVING ARTIFICIAL COLORS FROM ALL CANDY PRODUCTS _ There are some people who love to separate their M&M’s into different groups by the colors. What if M&M’s were all the same color, though? In a press release revealed by Mars. Inc., synthetic food dyes are going to be removed from the entire human food portfolio. Actually there should be no real change and Mars Inc. will likely have the transition perfected to natural coloring for products before making the switch or taking artificially colored products off of store shelves.

Newton acknowledged that he was a “sore loser” after the Panthers fell to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. Cam said Tuesday: “I’ve been on record to say I’m a sore loser. Who likes to lose? … Cam spoke to reporters on Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, while cleaning out his locker. Doing so is option and Panther coach Ron Rivers applauded his quarterback for speaking to the media.

… Cam also said: “I know who I am and I’m not about to conform nor bend for anybody’s expectations because your or anybody else’s expectations will never exceed mine.” And: “I had a lot of time to go back and play everything back. I’m human. I never once said that I was perfect. I never proclaimed that I was perfect, but at the end of the day, people pick and do things of that sort.”
