YOU WON’T BELIEVE HOW MUCH PROCESSED FOOD AMERICANS EAT _ The American diet isn’t exactly a shining example of the best way to eat, but most people probably don’t realize how much of our daily favorites include ingredients that you’d never find in an actual kitchen. In a study (University of Sao Paolo) found that nearly 60% of an American’s daily calories come from “ultraprocessed” food, which researchers defined as food that contains ingredients such as flavors, colors, sweeteners and hydrogenated oils, emulsifiers and other additives that you wouldn’t cook with at home.

The deputy followed the man to his home. When he tried to run inside, the deputy shot him with a Taser. He apparently wasn’t bluffing: Authorities say he urinated in the back of the patrol car on the way to the jail.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: HIGH SCHOOL SEGREGATES CAFETERIA _ A high school in China is segregating students at lunchtime as a way to prevent them from developing romantic relationships. In particular, school officials are aiming to prevent boys and girls from “feeding each other” — a public display of affection often practiced among young couples in China. A red line on the ground of the high school cafeteria demarcates two zones for male and female students, while assigned cafeteria monitors patrol the more than 3,000 students and take photos of any infractions of mixed seating or other violations.

HOW TO BE A GOOD HITCHHIKER

Does anyone hitchhike anymore? If found this guide for How to be a Good Hitchhiker from 20 years ago…

• Dress like the people you want to pick you up.

• Carry babywipes to stay clean.

• Always stand up, look the driver in the eye, and if you can tell he isn’t going to stop, pull in your thumb, wave, and smile at him. No one owes you a ride.

• If you hitch at night, you will get rides from independent truckers. If you walk to the top of a grade, so they will be in low gear when they reach you, you have a much better chance they’ll stop.

• Don’t be a mooch. Have enough money (and class) to buy your ride lunch. Offer to pump his gas, whatever.

• Whatever happens, think positive.

• Never ride with a drunk, no matter how desperate you are.

6 THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU DON’T DRINK ENOUGH WATER

Are you getting enough water? Here are some things that happen when you don’t drink enough.

1. You’re more likely to have health problems. Higher water intake has been linked to decreased chances of kidney stones, urinary and colon cancer, and heart attacks.

2. Your metabolism stagnates. In independent studies (by Dr. Howard Murad) a person’s basal metabolic rate (the calories burned while at rest) speeds up as the body becomes more hydrated.

3. You’ll have to think harder to complete the same tasks. Scientists (Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London) found that the brains of dehydrated teenagers had shrunk away from their skulls, and that when asked to play a problem-solving game, they performed just as well as those who drank enough, but engaged more of their brains to do so.

4. You’ll eat more. A study (Institute for Public Health and Water Research) found that those who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before each meal consumed 75 to 90 fewer calories while eating. Over three months, water-drinkers lost an average of five pounds more than the dieters who were parched.

5. You’ll look more wrinkled. Water plumps skin, fills in fine lines and wrinkles, and enlivens a dull complexion.

6. You’ll suffer from bad moods. Researchers (Tufts University) asked members of the men’s and women’s crew teams to engage in 60 to 75 minutes of high-impact aerobic exercise without drinking enough water first. Others were properly hydrated. The dehydrated group was more likely to report feeling fatigued, confused, angry, depressed, or tense.

MARCH MADNESS BRACKET TIPS

From TechTimes.com

• Do Research – That one little fact you may know about a team could be the difference that keeps you penciling in more winners than losers and keeps the heartbeat of your bracket pumping strong late in the game.

• Don’t Just Guess – Nine times out of 10, guessing wildly without any knowledge will bust your bracket. Do so at your own risk, but believe us when we say, your bracket is going to be a bloody mess.

• Do Lean On Star Players – Star players win games. When you pinpoint a dominant player put some faith into them leading their teams to victory.

• Do Give Proven Coaches The Benefit Of The Doubt – Treat coaches who have seen and done it all as just that and give them the benefit of the doubt.

• Don’t Over Emphasize Home Court Advantage – As raucous as crowds get, players have to win games. Don’t put too much on crowds willing teams to victory.

• Do Pencil In A Few Upsets – Historically, fifth seeds are often victims, falling to 12s. Going back to 1995, No. 5 seeds have been upset by 12th-seeded squads 33 times in 84 games, although there were no such upsets in any of those slots last year. Still, something to consider for your upset picks.

• Don’t Go Crazy With Dark Horses – We all have a team that we cozy up to that has a healthy chip on its shoulder, knowing they’re better than people are giving them credit for. We make them our dark horse, picking them to advance. carried away with them will break down your bracket fast.

• Don’t Overthink – Being too much of a bracketologist could be a bad thing when picking winners in your office pool. Overthinking, which could be triggered by all you read, hear and speak about the tournament with friends, is a definite don’t when it comes to vying for bracket supremacy.

5 MARCH MADNESS BRACKET TIPS FROM A MATH PROFESSOR

When Davidson College math and computer science professor Tim Chartier and his students aren’t helping coach Bob McKillop and the Wildcats’ men’s basketball teams scout opponents, they are busy tweaking and testing methods that assist college basketball fans in their quest to predict the elusive perfect NCAA tournament bracket. This time of year, Chartier is in demand. Using a data tool devised by big data company Tresata, he is exploring even more possibilities.

Here are five tips from Chartier’s team of students — looking at all regular season data dating back to 2002.

1. Want to pick a team with a seed of 10 or higher? Keep these stats in mind: Of teams with a 10 or higher seed, only two teams have won four games in the tournament (2.3 percent) and only four teams have ever won three games (4.5 percent). Of these teams, no team was higher than a 12 seed.

2. For teams in weaker conferences, it’s more difficult to tell how well they will play against stronger teams. To get a better sense of their strength as a team, look at the out of conference games that they play at the beginning of the season. Even if they lose, if it’s a close game or they limit the number of points scored by the other teams, that may indicate that they are a potential cinderella team.

3. Seed Stats: 76 percent of upsets are by 10, 11, or 12 seeds (27 percent by 12 seeds alone)

4. One-third of lower-ranked teams who win in the first round are ranked within the top 30 offensively — 55 percent were ranked within the top 50.

5. Stats of winning teams — in the past 14 years, every national champion except one was a 1, 2, 3 seed. The exception was Connecticut, a 7 seed. Every winner has been within the top eight best-or-strongest conferences. Every winner has been ranked within the top 25.
