NEWS ATTACK!

A Russian opposition leader was attacked with a toxic green dye. [Then he had to endure racial slurs at Fenway Park.]

In Florida a man returned to the house where he had had sex hours earlier with a woman he meet on a dating app and robbed her at gunpoint. [Call me old fashioned, but I thought that a gentleman didn’t do that until at least the third date.]

Canada is recalling a shipment of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin because it contains nearly twice as much alcohol as it should. [Isn’t that like leaving Disney World because the kids are having too much fun?]

An Oregon man working for a tree service company tried to push his co-worker into the wood chipper. [This is not going to look good on his quarterly review.]

The former business manager for Alanis Morissette is on his way to prison for embezzling. The prosecutor asked for five years, but the judge made it six years. [In other words, the judge dropped his own extended remix.]

At 95 Prince Phillip is retiring from his royal duties. He was mostly known for making embarrassingly sexist and racist comments. [Now he will just sit on the front porch yelling wildly inappropriate things at passing cars.]

American Airlines is reducing the legroom in economy class. [But you’ll still be able to squeeze into your chair. All seats will be coated with a non-stick cooking spray.]

Be careful. There’s a fake Facebook coupon for Mother’s Day making the rounds. [Just use some common sense. How many mothers would be interested in 30% off an afternoon of paintball?]

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, co-hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, announced that they are engaged. [The wedding will be held with limited commercial interruption.]

A new survey was conducted to determine what metropolitan areas have the healthiest eating habits. [Statisticians noticed that the healthiest areas are the ones farthest removed from a Paula Deen restaurant.]

NEWS & NUGGETS

HUMAN NOISE IN U.S. PARKS THREATENS WILDLIFE _ Tourists who visit national parks are there, in part, to get a break from the sights and sounds of their everyday lives. But evading human soundscapes isn’t easy. A new study (Colorado State University in Fort Collins) finds many protected areas are surprisingly noisy — noise generated by humans threaten the survival of plant and animal species across the country.

SOCCER PLAYER HAS 100 MILLION INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS _ Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has reached a couple of impressive milestones online. The Portuguese soccer god this week became the first athlete — and the first male — to hit 100 million followers on Instagram. The only other celebrities who can claim 100 million followers on Instagram are Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. But Ronaldo is the first person to rack up more than 100 million followers on both Instagram and Facebook, where he has more than 120 million fans.

74 PERCENT OF MILLENNIAL MOMS SAID THEY’VE SWORN IN FRONT OF CHILDREN _ AUDIO 🎧  No matter how hard they try, moms are very human — and that’s exactly what Kraft Macaroni & Cheese aims to portray in its new campaign to celebrate “perfectly imperfect” moms. As part of the campaign, Kraft conducted a survey of 1,000 millennial parents and found that 74 percent of moms admitted to swearing in front of their children — even more than dads. To help parents find kid-friendly alternatives to swearing, the Kraft enlisted the help of Melissa Mohr, author of Holy Sh*t: A Brief History of Swearing. • VIDEO

COMPANY WILL PAY YOU TO DRIVE AROUND THE COUNTRY IN A MOBILE WINE BAR _ An Oregon winery is searching for a “Canbassador” to travel the United States this summer in a mobile wine bar. The job: Promote Union Wine Company’s canned wine. The Canbassador will join the winery’s Road Trip Events team in traveling to festivals, store openings, and other outdoor events to promote its canned adult beverages. And while the position requires anywhere from one to four months away from home, those weeks away include drinking wine, meeting lots of new people and living out of a van.

JUST 30 SECONDS OF THIS WILL IMPROVE YOUR OUTLOOK, HEALTH, AND ENERGY _ What if I told you that there’s one thing you could do for 30-90 seconds each morning that would have an immediate positive impact on your health, your energy level, your brain chemistry, and your attitude? What is this miracle elixir? An icy cold shower. Not a coldish shower, but a blast of 38 degree icy cold water that causes you to gasp for air and let loose with a stream of obscenities. For at least 30 seconds. Some of the benefits:

• It triggers deep breathing which in turn increases your oxygen levels, your heart rate, and your overall cardiac function.
• It improves circulation and helps your arteries more efficiently pump blood.
• It lowers blood pressure, boosts your immune systems.
• Repeated cold showers have been shown to toughen you up, increasing your resilience to stress, or what’s called hardening.
• It activates your brown fat (this is the good fat that increases you metabolic rate so that you can burn more calories).

GUYS, CARGO SHORTS COULD BE RUINING YOUR LOVE LIFE _ Ever wonder what qualities set the hot apart from the not-so-hot on dating apps? Hater, which matches people based on their shared distaste for things, has mined its mountain of data about what their male users liked and and despise. Then it looked at the guys’ perceived attractiveness.

… The biggest points of contention between the two groups were cargo shorts and PBR. The least attractive 10 percent was more fond of cargo shorts compared to their more attractive counterparts. The hotties dug PBR considerably more than those at the bottom of the pile did.

CAFFEINATED BAGELS _ Einstein Bros Bagel chain just launched the world’s first caffeinated bagel called the “Espresso Buzz Bagel.” The bagels each contain 32 milligrams of caffeine, which is about a third of the amount found in an eight-ounce cup of coffee.

SPEED BUMPS FOR PEDESTRIANS INSTALLED TO SLOW DOWN TOURISTS _ Chinese tourists are being forced to slow down when they walk past a historic site because authorities were concerned that it wasn’t being appreciated enough. There are more than 50 bumps that basically force people to slow down as they walk past the historic site.

AIRLINE DID EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER TO HELP A MOTHER IN NEED _ Passenger Peggy Uhle will be forever grateful to Southwest Airlines after they helped her through a real family trauma. When Peggy boarded her flight from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio, she turned off her cell phone as the plane rolled away from the gate. But she and her fellow passengers didn’t get very far, because the plane suddenly turned around on the tarmac at Midway Airport and taxied back toward the gate. Peggy and the rest of the passengers had no idea what was happening. Once the plane was anchored at the gate, a flight attendant approached Peggy and asked her to get off. Peggy thought she had boarded the wrong plane, but when she got back inside the terminal, a gate agent told her to call her husband. He had been forced to contact Southwest Airlines because Peggy’s phone was turned off. But luckily, the airline managed to get the two spouses in contact with each other at the last moment. It turned out that Peggy’s 24-year-old son had suffered a serious head injury and was in a coma in Denver. Peggy had barely taken in the shocking news before a staffer explained that the airline had reticketed her on the next direct flight to Denver and arranged all of the other practical details.

… They offered a private waiting area, rerouted her luggage, allowed her to board first, and packed a lunch for when she got off the plane in Denver. Her luggage was delivered to where she was staying, and she even received a call from Southwest asking how her son was doing. Today, her son has fully recovered from his serious head injury.

WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT ONE YEAR AGO _ MEN TYPICALLY SAY “I LOVE YOU” FIRST _ A study found that when it comes to confessions of love, men often are the first to declare their feelings. Contrary to popular belief, women aren’t as quick as men to confess their love, despite their reputation for being emotionally-driven and relationship-oriented. According to the study (in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) two-thirds of couples report that male partners said “I love you” first.

… However, although men say “I love you” first, researchers caution that their motivations for sharing their feelings are different than a woman’s motivations. The study found that while men consider saying “I love you” a full six weeks before their partners, they are also more likely to enjoy hearing those words if they haven’t yet had sex. On the other hand, women are more likely to enjoy hearing “I love you” if sex already has occurred.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: GANG OF RONALD MCDONALDs JERRORIZED A KFC _ A gang of rugby fans dressed as Ronald McDonald clowns walked inside a KFC in Hampshire, England and chanted insults. The group held beer cans and shouted expletives inside the fast-food restaurant. It wasn’t some bizarre marketing stunt on behalf of McDonald’s. It’s thought the group were a bunch of inebriated rugby fans on their way to see a game.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN CHARGED WITH ATTACKING NEIGHBOR WITH A BOWLING PIN _ A Montana (Missoula) man allegedly attacked his neighbor with a bowling pin. He’s been charged.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN GOES INTO HOME, DISCHARGES FIRE EXTINGUISHER, PRAYS WITH RESIDENT _ In Ohio (Wayne County) a man walked into the home of a couple, discharged a fire extinguisher and then laid at the foot of their bed. Then the man of the house and the intruder had a short time of prayer before the intruder left into the darkness. After leaving the house, the man stole a golf cart from a nearby business. When deputies pulled over the golf cart, the man identified himself as “Jesus.”

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: STUDENTS CLIMB THROUGH CEILING DUCTS TO STEAL EXAMS _ A pair of students at the University of Kentucky who broke into the campus to steal final exams were caught by their professor. One of the students climbed into their professor’s office through the ceiling ducts at 2 AM on Wednesday. The other student was waiting outside for the first to open the door to their professor’s office. Their professor was on campus working late and foiled the potential theft.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: VADER COSTUME FORCES SCHOOL EVACUATION _ A high school in Wisconsin (Ashwaubenon) missed the memo, forcing its students to evacuate the building yesterday (Thursday) after an overly concerned parent called the police on “someone walking into the school wearing dark clothing and a mask.” A student came to school wearing a Darth Vader mask for Star Wars Day.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DRIVER WITH CHICKEN IN HIS LAP RAN A-FOWL OF THE LAW _ Some drivers are distracted by texting. Others by a juicy hamburger or the GPS. Police in St. Paul, Minnesota, pulled over a 52-year-old man who failed to stop for three pedestrians in a crosswalk while his chicken was right there with him behind the wheel. The pedestrians were not hit, but the man got a ticket.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: CAR THIEF CAUGHT A SECOND TIME _ Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, got a tracking signal from a reported stolen vehicle. They found it parked at an apartment complex just as two men got in it and drove away. They followed them — to a nearby courthouse. The men parked and went inside. The driver was there to get an ankle monitor, a condition of his release from jail a few days before: he was out on bail after allegedly stealing a different car at gunpoint.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WEED EATER _ Baton Rouge police say they noticed a man weaving in and out of lanes — and there was no license plate on his car. Once he pulled over the man’s breath had a strong smell of weed. A search turned up multiple drugs, but perhaps less than it might have. The man told police he didn’t want the officers to find pot in his car so he was trying to eat it all.

CHRIS PRATT APOLOGIZES TO HEARING IMPAIRED FANS _ Earlier this week Chris Pratt uploaded a video to his Instagram where he asked viewers to listen with the volume on instead of reading the subtitles. Almost immediately after uploading the video, Chris’s followers began criticizing him for not being sensitive to the needs of those watching with hearing impairments. (The video, which Pratt uploaded to promote his upcoming film, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, has since been removed.) Pratt shared a follow-up video Thursday to issue a sincere apology. In the video, Chris makes an important gesture by apologizing entirely in American Sign Language, saying in the caption: “Now… I know some of you are going to say, ‘Hey, Chris only apologized because his publicist made him!’ Well. That is not the case. As always I control my social media. Nobody else. And I am doing this because I’m actually really sorry.” • VIDEO

Pratt said, “I got a facial at the hotel, yes, I did. I was going to get a massage and a facial. At one point they were asking me if I wanted caviar rubbed on my face. Just when you think I’m a super-humble, normal guy, just remember that I got caviar rubbed on my face. It felt so good. Popped all the zits on my nose. My blackheads were gone.”

WHAT’S UP WITH CINCO DE MAYO?

It’s May 5. In Spanish, today’s date is “Cinco de Mayo,” and celebrations will be held in many cities across the U.S., as well as Mexico. The origin of the day’s observance is the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when outnumbered Mexican troops defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III. Over the years, the celebration has evolved from one of military victory to a colorful and vibrant event celebrating Mexican culture. There are 31.7 million people of Mexican descent in the U.S. — 10 percent of the total population.

RIDDLE

I’m called by three letters
Though I have a long name.
I’m in all of you,
But I’m never the same.

I’m all coiled up
So that I am quite small,
But if you stretch me out
I’ll be really tall.

I could be the root
Of certain disease;
If man can unlock me
He’ll solve many mysteries.

Answer: DNA. (Normally, DNA is coiled up inside chromosomes; however, if you were to stretch out a single strand, it would be between 6-9 feet long!)
